Which Handle Size is Right For Me
Wondering whether to go with the large or small handled tools? Its personal preference (some people with smaller hands still prefer the larger handles.)
That being said, according to the feedback we've received, the general rule is:
- larger hands (a medium or larger glove size) prefer the large handle set
- smaller hands (most of the women and children who gave us feedback) prefer the small handle set

These are very sharp and high quality wood carving tools that work very well. I’ve been using them in wood inletting projects and they always seem to come in when I need a specialized scraper.They’re cheap for what they are but still work extremely well.If you’re used to palming the end of the handle for leverage they are a bit long, but I did. It have an issue with that.

The new chisel carving sets will come in handy for small on the go projects. We were recently talking about the different knife companies and comparing the blades and finishes. It's already been a learning experience for me, and from our conversations, it sounds like I learned a lot from the Schaaf videos to be able to add a bit of my own knowledge to share. V-tool will need attention. If the tip has a bird beak sticking out, this will not carve properly. All tools that are not top of the line finish will need to be sharpened, so connect with some pros. Sharpen, then hone until there are no tool grinding marks or flat areas on the bevel edge. It was a nice way to compare with my antique collection to the perfect metalurgy of today's wood carving tools.

Although I am an experienced woodworker, I am relatively new to wood carving. Years ago, I bought a Schaaf set of carving tools for a wood turning project and was very impressed with the quality of the tools and the after-purchase relationship with the company in the form of information and instruction on carving. Since that original purchase, I’ve purchased Schaaf chip and spoon carving tools as well as sharpening and other carving-related equipment. I’m a member of two carving clubs and my Schaaf tools have gotten excellent reviews by the other more advanced carvers in the clubs. So, when I saw the new 12 piece set of pen chisels, I didn’t hesitate to order a set. I happened to be working on a small fish decoy carving at the time and needed a easy to maneuver very small chisel to carve some small insets in the body of the fish for the fins. Two knives in the pen set were the perfect solution. So, I recommend Schaaf tools in general and the pen set as an addition to your collection. You won’t be disappointed.

The set itself is great and I'm really happy with the quality of the carving tools and the set as a whole. Just really bummed that the sharpening stone arrived broken in 4 pieces and there is no way to just get that one part replaced. I don't want to waste my time/energy to drive 30 min in each direction to return the item and get a replacement so I'll just live without the sharpening stone. This part really needs to be protected with thicker foam in the packaging.Tools are ergonomic and easy to use and you get a ton of variety for chisel tips to create really cool designs. Great little set

The wood carving kit is very well made. Chisels are very sharp and great for detailed carving. Handles fit hand comfortably and provide good purchase while carving. Overall, it is a very good deal.

This kit has 12 gouges and chisels that should let the beginning carver grow into more complex carving. The regular handle size even fits large hands well. All the cutting edges are fairly sharp but will need to be honed as you start carving. The kit includes honing compound, leather strop and curved stone for the gouges. That is all that is needed except time to practice. It's fun.

This set is amazing! This set comes with a variety of tools and they all come ready to use! Sharp! I appreciate the option to choose small or large handles as well. I have tiny hands and have found other wood carving tools can be too large and uncomfortable to use for a long period of time. Great product for a great price!
