Double Ended Calipers are designed for measuring the wall thickness of turned vessels, especially closed form bowls and vases. When you close one end of the caliper on the wall of your bowl, you can read the thickness at the other end of the caliper. These are an indispensable addition to the turner's armory for measuring both wall thickness and diameters. Because of their design the measurement taken at one end automatically transfers to the opposite end. This enables the turners to take an accurate measurement reading without the need to remove the calipers. Measure the exposed end whilst the other is still in contact with the work. Such a simple design. But the thickness it reveals (in the gap on the other end) is accurate. I use it for defining thickness's in turning wood bowls on a lathe.

The tool works as it is supposed to, but the metal bends easily. Make sure to hang it in a place where you won't bend it. However, it works well and is much cheaper than other brands.

Got this today. A little large, 14" from end to end, 7.5" side to side, but no matter. It's 1/8" thick steel. When closed at one end, is 1/16" open on the other, but fixable with a brief touch of a grindstone. Was packed in just a padded bag, no other protection, so the ends were bent out of line vertically, but easily bent back into line. Ends were smoothly rounded. Edges were a little sharp, but usable, I didn't feel the need to sand the edges. Since the steel is rather thin, the center screw is retained by a 1/8" thick threaded washer, 3/4" diameter. I would have liked it to be made of a harder, or thicker steel, but all in all a good tool for woodturning bowls..
