Plug taps are ideal for cutting right-hand internal threads; they are the most widely used type of tap, with three to five threads chamfered for general-purpose applications. The included drill bit is matched to the tap for the proper hole size. The bit is designed with split points to reduce bit walking for clean, accurate starts. The bit’s speed helix design promotes fast drilling. The plug tap is recommended when there is sufficient room on a blind hole and tapping to the bottom of a hole is not critical. Made from heat-treated carbon steel, it is a rust- and tarnish-resistant tool. The rolled threads are more accurate and cleaner than machined threads. I stripped out a screw hole in the soft aluminum of my Shopsmith and needed to drill and tap a new hole. This worked perfectly for that task.

I bought this to tap some threads in aluminum. It is really nice to have the appropriate size drill bit included since it can be a bit time consuming to figure out which one to use. It did the jobs I wanted it to do and would buy it again. Just remember that when tapping, you don't want to put a lot of torque on the tap or it will snap like a twig. (I usually have my hand over top of the tap wrench rather than holding the handles.) Frequently rotating it backwards to break the chips free will help ensure the success of the tapping operation and keep from breaking it off. A broken tap is very difficult to remove since it is so hard that most drill bits won't touch it. They will just skate off the surface.

Drill bits, work as they should. Good quality. Not much else to say. I'm to lazy to drive to Home Depot or Lowes and fight the crowd of people.

The drill bit was sharp enough however the unmarked steel used to drill into was most likely a tool steel. A lubricant was used while drilling but the depth obtained was more shallow than desired. The enclosed tap was still able to cut a few threads and the stainless steel bolt was still able to be threaded. Despite not being able to complete the task as intended, it was at least nice not having to fish around for the correct drill size to match the tap.

Used for mounting holes for carburetors on cast iron manifold. Zero problems still sharp and intact.

Having the exact size drill recommended come with the tap helps. You don't have to lookup the correct drill size in machinery handbook then search for the exact size. Saving time saves money when you have many things on the list to do.

Bought this to drill out some steel. Applied a few drops of oil before drilling. Like butter it drilled out the hole. I attached the tap to my drill and bam.. Done! Worked perfect!
