UPDATE There is definitely a learning curve to be able to slice evenly. The instructions to angle the tip of the knife down are spot on. A 45° angle finally worked for me.I got this slicing guide today and wow is it nice! The first thing I noticed, before I even opened the package is how very heavy it is. I just assumed that the wooden part would be lightweight and the stainless steel part would be flimsy. I was wrong. The guide tines are really heavy gauge stainless steel. I thought thet might be flimsy, but I don't think you could even bend them with pliers! There's a nice, thick stainless steel (I think) plate that fits betwwen the 2 guides, so your knife is never going to touch or scratch the wood. The guides fit so tightly into the grooves I couldn't get them seated-my husband had to do it. Then I put the them in and out a few times and wiggled them a bit and now they come in and out easily for disassembling and storing. The guides are identical, rather than a right and left, so one fits with the reinforcing bar on the outside and the other has to go the opposite way to line up the tines. The cutting technique is different because of the wider spaces between the tines. On the other hand, my electric knife should fit-it doesn't on my other slicer. This is from the instruction sheet:"This product, functions similarly to other wooden slicers. However, due to its wider slit, it requires more skill and proficiency to use effectively. It may take some time to become accustomed to it.To become familiar with the grip, it is recommended to place the bread knife against the wire and practice cutting.Use a moderate amount of force to press the side of the knife against the wire to the left or right. Move the bread knife downwards with a steady speed and strength, while pulling it back and forth to make the cut. Ensure that the angle of the knife tip is downward."Definitely would highly recommend this bread slicer. This product functions similarly to other wooden slicers. This seems to work well for my bread maker bread. The metal plate prevents any wood splinter issues. Only issue I had that prevents 5 stars is the metal grates where not lining up i took one of the metal grates and switched it around so the bar at the bottom faces out instead of in and now the cuts aline. I would recommend this. Folds easily.

It's better than most I have tried. Cuts even slices of various widths. I keep it in a corner of the counter because I bake my own bread and cut some almost daily. It does break down, though, if you want to store it in a cupboard. I consider it to be fairly sturdy. The crumb tray is a real plus. The knife is nice and sturdy. I keep it right with the bread slicer, ready to go. I'm glad I got this one. Has made slicing my bread much more pleasant.

The metal guides are perfect size, but the wood base arrived damaged. It was split, and unusable. Had to return.

This bread slicing guide Is thoughtfully designed and seems ideal for *evenly* slicing homemade bread. I make 13†long loaves of square sandwich bread in a lidded “pullman†pan and the adjustable widths of this slicer work perfectly. There are several potential widths available depending on how the metal guides are inserted, and the metal uprights offer several slice thicknesses depending on which side of the uprights you hold the bread knife while slicing. There are silicone feet on the bottom of the wood base that grip the counter while you slice, and the metal plate that fits into the top of the wood base ensures there will be no wood bits in your cut bread. It’s important to use the clear plastic “backstop†to steady the loaf as you cut.

I like it, but an unintended consequence is that it is hard to focus on the steel slicing guide when looking down. The item shipped fast. It is as described. There is no way for me to keep it all together when not in use other than to store it in the package it shipped in. Overall, I think it is an improvement to the plastic ones that cut easily. The stainless steel cutting board scratched a little, but I think it can probably be buffed out. I do wish it had come with a second acrylic stopper or backboard. And the non-slip feet don't work so well if you place the unit on a cutting board, though my son said it was because he was too strong pushing on the bread. All in all I think it was a good purchase for the price.
