How FM Transmitters Work

FM Transmitter Setup

FM transmitters are great devices that serve a wide variety of applications. These devices are typically connected to the headphone jack (or audio output jack) of an audio source and are able to transmit the audio on vacant FM frequencies. These wireless FM broadcasts can then be received by any FM radio.

FM transmitters are often used to transmit audio from source devices like MP3 players, satellite radio receivers, etc. to car stereos, home theaters, or portable radios. Currently people are purchasing them to broadcast church services to their parking lot, hold mini drive in movies with their neighbors and hosting concerts in parking lots. One point of confusion that often exists, is transmitting an AM signal over FM. The transmitter doesn’t “care” what is on the audio signal, it just uses the FM broadcast band to send that signal to other devices on that same selected frequency.

One of the greatest benefits of FM transmitters is the fact that the transmitted audio signal may be received by any and all FM radios within range. As far as the radios are concerned, they are receiving an FM signal just like a normal FM radio station.

Range is good for my needs (1400sq ft house), noise is low, sound quality is good.My only complaint is that they didn't just put a 'female' 1/8th" jack right on the unit. Having to adapt from 'male' 1/8th" to anything else is really annoying and unnecessary. I'll probably mod mine, eventually.

These work well and sound slightly better than the Model 2 does.I use this to allow me to listen to the same thing in all rooms.I added in an audio compressor/limiter and it improved it nicely.Without the compressor, some radios had a little backgroundhiss in the quiet parts the compressor has allowed me to bringup (and limit) the audio improving the overall listing experience.I picked up some inexpensive compressor modules(SSM2167 type) to experiment with to build a simplecompressor for the C. Crane Digital FM Transmitter 3I see that Amazon has some SSM2167 compressor modulesSearch for Item # B09D3W8ZRN"SSM2167 Microphone Preamplifier Board DC 3V-5V Low NoiseCOMP Compression Module Mono Amplifier Audio Sound Board"Also, take some time to make sure your receiver antennas are oriented thesame as the Transmitter to get the best reception from the transmitter. Also for short antennas as found on portable radios adding some extrawire to the existing antenna to lengthen it (to about 30 ") may help..

This is a very good transmitter that works very well as long as you have empty bandwidth to use where you live. I love the ability to transmit music and podcasts from my phone or MP3 player to my quality radio speakers. I feel it's a good value if this is something you could use.

I first used this C Crane transmitter way back in 2003 before that I was using another brand which was constantly malfunctioning ( I had bought 5 of those over a 6 year period between 1995 and 1999 the last one finally bit the dust in 2002) I can say this transmitter is solid and with good care and proper maintenance it will last years my first one lasted for well over a decade And I never modified it or tried to I only use a wire attached to an alligator clip to maximize the overall signal strength for all the radios in my home if you live in an apartment complex the signal can reach immediate neighbors above or below you and Maybe the car radios in the parking lots nearby ( my experiences at least) and all this without having to illegally modify the device as this is a part 15 FCC approved device. The sound quality is stellar for what it is I use mixers and my tablet and computer audio as well as CD players for my audio programming for the Transmitter it's been a long time hobby and always check the unused FM frequencies as the quality may vary and some FM stations signals tend to bleed into those unused frequencies so you will need to experiment and test to get the best results I highly recommend this transmitter as I'm a seasoned user and I can say I'm very satisfied with this transmitter
