This was only my second set of charcoals, my first being charcoal pencils. But these worked very nicely, I was quickly able to sketch a cartoon-style portrait. The compression of the levels feels nice and you can get broad strokes very quickly and easily with the soft ones, and fine detail with the hard one, especially using one of the corners. Who doesn't need kneaded erasers? I ALWAYS need new kneaded erasers, so it was awesome to have 2 in the package. You do have to pull and pull them like taffy to get them soft and sticky (if you never used a kneaded eraser before - that is also how you clean them, by pulling and pulling and folding over, like kneading bread or clay).

My daughters go through art supplies like it's their job. I ordered this set mostly for the erasers. They like the charcoal, but don't use it a whole lot. They do like the erasers, though, so it's a win.

I'll admit I'm not versed enough in charcoal to really judge if the quality is superior or not, but for doing gesture sketches on newsprint just as warmups and studies, they're working great for me. There's a lot in the pack so I'd imagine I'll have enough to last me ages, and the kneaded erasers are great.
