From the Manufacturer

Rico Royal reeds in strength 3.0 combine the features of the traditional Rico cut with a stronger spine and a "French file," allowing for more resonance and harmonics in the sound.

Rico Royal reeds have a more traditional French filed cut for increased response, especially in the low register, adding clarity to the tone and making soft attacks easier. Available for the full range of saxophone and clarinet voices and conveniently packaged in boxes of ten reeds.

Since the acquisition of Rico by D'Addario & Co., Rico has strengthened its position as the global leader in woodwind reeds and accessories. Rico's state-of-the-art reed research center in Southern California employs a collaboration of agronomists, scientists, and musicians to produce top-quality reeds, including Rico Reserve premium reeds for clarinet and saxophone. Rico reeds are designed to benefit all levels of musicians, from the beginner to the seasoned professional. Many of the world's finest woodwind players perform with Rico reeds, such as Mark Nuccio, Jerry Bergonzi, Chris Potter, Benny Golson, Ernie Watts, Bob Sheppard, Henri Bok, Richie Hawley, Eric Alexander, and many more.

I've used mostly Rico reeds for the last 20+ years, and it's pretty rare that I get a reed I'm not happy with. I've experimented with other kinds, but I really like the consistency you get with Rico. The 3.0 reeds are probably my favorite for general play, but I usually keep some softer and firmer ones around for different purposes.I also like that Rico is owned by D'Addario, which has a nonprofit foundation dedicated to supporting music education, especially in areas that might not otherwise be able to fund programs. It's probably a tiny amount of money compared to overall corporate profits, but it's still nice that they do it and I'm sure the musicians who benefit appreciate the help.

These clarinet reads have a different sound than the normal Rico Reeds. They work very well and feel the same as the other. The sound is a little darker and they seem suited to more classical music.

Works well for my daughter she has been using the one from the 3 pack with no issues of cracking. Definitely good buy considering the other brands prices. I will purchase these again

I’m a band teacher, and my son plays clarinet. He’s a 6th grader. We’ve tried all the reeds out there, and he likes these the best. I know most people prefer Vandoren, and I don’t mind Vandoren, myself; but honestly, my kid does sound better on the Royals…..

I usually play with traditional vandoren but since I had a front tooth snap off completely at the gum line, and a denture plate installed, I have struggled to play at all. The 2.5 was too soft and I choked the notes, but the 3.0 was too hard and I couldn't get some of the notes. One difficulty is that I can't tell how much presure is on the fake tooth so the reed sits differently on my lip. So I experimented with the v12's as those are meant to be a little softer than the 3.0. I also bought these Royal reeds 3.0 because of a comparison chart which likened them to half way between what a vandoren 2.5 and 3.0 offers. The V12's were good but I still found they didn't vibrate well still. Ideally the whole reed should vibrate. I took one of the Royals out of its casing and noticed some loose fibres of the cain hanging on the side near the heart area. I carefully resolved that and placed it on my instrument after wetting. Wow! So easy to make a sound with it. I didn't feel the tonal darkness I usually have was quite there but the sound produced was still very nice. Some notes ai have always thought sounded poor for me or struggled to make sound as professional in quality, sounded really good. I found I could bend the notes so easily too. That is not something I have ever been able to do well at all.I would agree that the 3.0 is half way between a vandoren traditional 2.5 and 3.0. The mouthpiece I tested on was the one whoch came with my new Buffet E12RL. I had been playing on a series 88 profile vandoren mouthpiece before the tooth accident/injury but my embrasure has changed and I can't get on with that one now. But keep in mind that these reeds will respond differently with different facing and profile mouthpieces.
