These are top of the line violas made by incredibly talented luthiers especially for discerning string players.Each viola is made from a two piece maple back and solid carved spruce top, and is hand-rubbed with antique varnish. The wood is naturally dried outside on a covered, ventilated area for several years. The wood is then placed into a drying room, consistent with old world traditional European practices. This process ensures that the wood will not open or expand, and guarantees stability.

I purchased the D Z Strad Model 120 14" viola and have been playing it for a month now. I am pleasantly surprised with the quality of the instrument and the ease of ordering through Amazon / D Z Strad. I would rate this viola as a very high-level student to low-level intermediate instrument.I have an older 15" viola that I have had for over 50 years but am unable to play it now without pain, due to a left shoulder injury. The new D Z Strad Model 120 14" viola allows me to play again with less pain. This 14" viola is basically the same size as a 4/4 violin but still has a beautiful, mellow viola sound. As nice as it sounds, don't expect it to have quite the same volume and depth as a full-size viola (15" or more).This viola has a beautiful finish, with a dark reddish-brown color. Not like the bright orange or red colors you find on less expensive instruments. The bow is good (average) quality and the case is nicer than expected.Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase and feel that I've gotten more than my money's worth. I hope to try out some of D Z Strad higher level violas in the future.

So far this has been a good instrument. I was told (after the purchase) that I should not buy from Amazon and only to make an instrument purchase from places the school recommended. I did see several lower quality and much lower cost instruments and went with a better quality one.

The viola was beautiful but unfortunately my granddaughter changed her mind and wants to play the violin so I had to return it.
