After I installed the Solo Belcanto set on my bass my hubby bought me this past Christmas, my bass decided it really DID NOT like the top A string at all. It refused to speak properly and was causing other playing problems. I may have received a bad string in the set so I ordered this Kaplan A string as a replacement. We installed it a day ago and I immediately felt the difference under my fingers (higher tension) and my bass suddenly was very happy with the tighter tension string. The A string not only speaks well now and solved a few other minor playability issues the Belcanto string caused, but it sings LOUDLY now with a distinct warm, full, clear projecting sound. I am surprised at how much PROJECTION this string has as I've always only used Pirastro strings on my basses. Now I'm considering replacing all the Belcantos with Kaplans for my next string change on my solo bass. It's not a dig on Belcantos at all as they are fantastic warm dark full sounding strings but not all basses, especially hand-carved ones, react the same way that other basses would. My bass I've found is on the temperamental fully hand carved side- annoyingly temeramental but when you get it right, oh boy the tone and sound is amazing. I finally got it right with this string as an addition and am now happily making my Double Bass sing beautifully.
