I have had this Dasco scratch awl for a few weeks. It is very similar to the , except the Dasco is blue while the Bostitch is yellow. These two awls have virtually the same size, shape, and weighty feel. Both are super sharp upon arrival. Both work very well for starting holes before drilling. Even a small mark in wood can reduce the chance of a drill bit finding its own starting point. It seems like an extra step before actually drilling something. Experience shows, however, that this step SAVES time because bits are more likely to drill right where you want them, without skating around. In wood I rarely use a mallet because this scratch awl is sharp enough and has enough heft that I can just press by hand to get a good starting hole before setting the drill bit on the hole from the awl.UPDATE: After a year of frequent use this awl is still very sharp. I reach for it so often, it is usually on my bench instead of stored on the wall. One of the most used tools in my shop. Still 5 stars, easy.

This heavy scratch awl also works fabulously as a center hole punch for locating pilot holes precisely where you need them. I had previously purchased a punch set which included this awl. I like it so well, I decided to order a 2nd awl. This came in particularly handy when I had a task of placing some casters on the bottom of a cabinet I was building. Each caster mount requires 4 screws and precise positioning of screws was important to securely attach the casters. Having punched one hole, I pressed one awl into the hole, which held the caster securely enoughthat I could punch the next hole with my 2nd awl. I placed the 2nd awl in that hole which held the caster completely fixed, and I drilled the other 2 pilot holes, all without have to swap out my drill bit for a screwdriver bit.

Extremely well-made tool, ergonomic.. the point that came from the factory looks like a five-year-old made it by rubbing it on the sidewalk. It is completely off-center and does not match the listing photograph.

First takes: super well made, heavy duty. It’s got some heft to it. Have used it a bunch already and it has remained in great shape. Highly recommended versus getting one of those cheap $4 ones which will inevitably break (ask me how I know… went through one before buying this one). One piece of advise, this doesn’t come with a cover and it’s SUPER pointy/sharp. If you cut a big pen in half you can use the shaft of the pen to stick over the top so you don’t accidentally prick yourself

Made in USA is good, so is the price. The fit and finish is terrible. Deep forge marks, poor grind, and poor paint quality (top peeled before it left the packaging).

Bought one several years ago to break up ice jams along a roof line.........have used this tool many times over the years. It is made so well. Simple tool made well.

I hone the tip to be very sharp. Most often it's used for making small starter holes in wood for drilling, sometimes as a scribe on wood or soft metals.

De punt heb ik zelf minder scherp gemaakt. Dit om dat het bij ons niet de bedoeling is om destructieve inspecties uit te voeren.

I use scratch awl to dot sheet metal to mark the bend points and I made about 30 dots before the tip broke off 1/4" from the tip making it useless unless I grind it down.

Works fine, but I find an etching pen is usually better for my purposes. I ended up not using this.
