With some practice and study, this sextant is a very good functional sextant , for a plastic sextant.

This is an ideal instrument for learning celestial navigation, or as a backup instrument for long ocean voyages. It does takes some practice to learn to use it and do the calculations. After a couple of months of practice I can get within about 3 miles of the actual location. You will need the year's celestial almanac and sight reduction tables for the range of latitudes that you will in to use the device.

Several times a year, members of our family charter a catamaran to sail in the Caribbean. Since this is not open ocean sailing, we do not take our expensive, metal Sextant on board a flight to the Virgin Islands. Instead, we use a Davis Instruments Mark-25, a plastic Sextant, which has turned out to be rugged enough to survive the trips and accurate enough to keep and hone our Celestial Navigation skills. It is easy to re-calibrate the plastic Sextant before each use and accurate enough for use in the Caribbean, or along the coastlines from Canada to South America.

Works well and is easy to hold for sights as well as accurate shooting the sun. The filters work very well. I do wish that now with the advent of laser technology that the numbers cut into the arc and drum also the micrometer making it easier to read. The light is a bit weak for night sights but would not want it to much brighter.

A friend and I each bought this product for use in US Power Squadron's "Junior Navigation" course. It was worthless; neither of us could do sight reductions using this product. When we complained during the class, the instructor--an experienced celestial navigator--took the product and tried to use it; he too was unable to use it. It is extremely difficult to move the arm in a smooth and easy motion. Another user mentioned lubricating with hand soap; we tried that and it temporarily improved performance. This is a case where spending the money for a higher-quality metal-based instrument would have been the wiser choice. The product's only virtue is its light weight compared to metal sextants.

Se ve que hay que manejarlo con cuidado y evitar golpes cuando lo usas, en un velero los embates del mar te pueden hacer perder el equilibrio con facilidad. Guardarlo en su estuche tras cada uso es fundamental para mantenerlo no ya ajustado, algo que siempre vas a tener que revisar antes de usarlo, sino para que siga “vivoâ€

I have no idea if there are better machines out there, suffice to say that this was the best available for the price (new). It's a bit like buying a second slr camera. There are good ones and then there others....So I bought this one in the hope it works properly.It came well packed and intact and it looks plasticky. But that is no.bad.thing. - There are many types.of plastic - Some are used in cars, and planes, and, of course boats, and weapons systems etcSo why not instruments? Keep it clean and properly lubricated and all should be hunky dory, OK? And you can wash it out with salt water on the shore if you need to get sand, grit and small sea life etc. Then rinse It in clear water to remove the salt.All I need is large expanse of sea ! Ho Hum. :--)..

This was a gift, so a return product, was unwelcome.Still everything was in place, but it had been opened already, and some slight signs were visible on the carrying case.The recipient was happy nevertheless, and the price point was good, but returns should not be sold for new, also because we could’ve had worse luck with the recipient not being ok with it.
