Fitting up to a tree trunk is really hard without contour gauges to handle the undulating shape. The angled blade points of these two gauges lets you get right in at the surface to get the best profile. You can also flip them over and get a profile above the surface if that would work better for your project. Sometimes you need two gauges working together to catch all the variation. I found the 10 inch gauge did not lock very tightly turned to either side but a tiny adjustment with a #2 Philips screwdriver brought that up nice and snug. I liked the locking on the 5 inch gauge as it was. The thin plastic blades help get a detailed profile but they also can be flexible so you have to be careful of putting any side force on the gauge in use. I counted 18 blades per inch.

There are a lot of very similar tools on the market and I haven't noticed any great difference among them, with one exception: these modern plastic plate gauges are quite superior to the similar tool made with round wires instead of flat plates. I've used my old wire based gauge for years, usually with some cursing under my breath. The plastic plate gauges are a joy to use by comparison. All give a pattern with tiny steps instead of a smooth curve, and one must be sure that the gauge is well locked before tracing the curve. A bit of careful craftsmanship is still needed to cut a piece to fit, but making the pattern is fairly simple. Is someone can invent a gauge that gives a smooth curve I will give that one 5 stars.Having gauges in both large and small sizes covers both bigger profiles and cramped situations.

These are simple, yet effective profile tools. The two sizes are sufficient to handle most profiling situations. The resolution is adequate for most situations as well. The locking mechanism feels a little stiff, but that might be remedied over time with use. They will get the profiling job done for the occasional or DIY user.Overall, I think these profiling tools are adequate to the job, and I recommend them.

We got these in just before our big project coming up, but just from messing around with it around the house I can tell its going to do exactly what we need it to do. Its easy to use, sturdy, holds shape, over all great. Would definitely recommend.

I've used better versions, but these do work. For the price, they will get the job done.
