If you have a tuba and you need to practice in a noise-sensitive environment (apartment), this mute will do the trick. A muted tuba sounds rather funny, and any upstairs neighbors you have might wonder if you have a serious digestive disorder if they happen to hear it.I use this mute with a Yamaha YBB321. One thing I've noticed with my mute is that it shifts the pitch up approximately one half-step. Some people might not notice, but those with perfect pitch (like me) will definitely take note. I don't know if it's by design or a flaw in my individual product, but I'm taking a star away because of this issue.

It appears that cork spacers to center the mute in the bell of the tuba were missing.

I have a rather large vintage tuba, and as anyone who plays the tuba knows, a big tuba makes a very big sound. This cuts down the sound of the horn to a low speaking volume when played moderately. If played loudly (that fortissimo part), it'll be a little louder, but won't even approach the volume of an overly excitable aunt around the thanksgiving food preparation table. This does exactly what I needed it to do, it lets me play tuba in my apartment without bugging the neighbors. And a little extra weatherstripping-type foam from any home improvement store will adapt the mute to fit in any size instrument, though I wouldn't use this for some 6/4 monster tuba, that's a little silly.

Purchased for my college age son so he could practice his tuba in his apartment without disturbing his neighbors. It was VERY important to him that the mute not interfere with the tone. This mute has been perfect! We cannot hear the tuba through walls or the floor (from the basement), but he can hear the notes perfectly while playing.

Excellent intonation and greatly muted volume for a given breath volume. Very practical for practicing without annoying people.

Bought this for my husband who is working on his doctorate in tuba performance. This mute has had it possible for him to practice without disturbing the family or disturbing the apartment neighbors! He says it gives great resistance without compromising tone. He no longer has to take the tuba all the way to the university to practice.
