This is the perfect sheet sander, and it's added a ton of flexibility and functionality to my carpentry work. How often do you cut something just a little too long, then end up cutting off just a little too much on the second go, only to have to recut the entire piece? Measure twice, cut once, sure... that works most of the time, but when you're in a hurry, or tired, it's not easy to nail those tight tolerance cuts, especially if all you've got to work with is a circular saw. I keep this orbital sander handy for times when I've left a little too much on the piece, so that I can grind that extra bit off instead of re-grabbing for the saw. My pieces are fitting together perfectly now because I'm to make them fit just right, rather than having to rely on screws to hold things in place (though I over-engineer everything and put screws in anyway...). This is an essential tool for my suite of Dewalt power tools, and one of the most important in my bag now. I seriously don't know how I lived without a nice orbital sander for the past four years, and I'm especially happy that I was able to pick it up for a low price. BTW, I prefer the corded sander because, unlike a drill, I'm almost never using it from a ladder, a remote location, etc. You may want to go cordless if you're on the move a lot.

I am a painting contractor employing 6-9 men and this is my favorite sander. I found the Makita far too buzzy, they make your hand numb after about half-an-hour. the Porter-Cable Speedbloc 330 is a nice solid machine, but for twice the price I didn't get any more hours out of them than the DeWalt, and the clips for the sandpaper are awkward.I was previously using the DeWalt D411 and the D26441k is a better sander for a couple of good reasons: The grip is more comfortable in your hand; There is a vacuum attachment that works very well.The performance is very good and these sanders will go all day long for days on end without a hiccup, even without any kind of maintenance. I started buying these about a year ago and none of the 5 I bought have had any problems. I buy replacement pads from [...] for about $16 and replace them when the corners get down to bare metal.I have not had any "screeching" sanders.The dust collector that is included is about as worthless as every other manufacturers dust collector, so I don't see a reason to demote the DeWalt.Not all shop vacuums have the same diameter hose-end, but ShopVac brand 1 1/4" hose fits this perfectly. Also, if you search, you can find a universal adapter for hose-ends. Again, customer service not withstanding, I don't hold this against DeWaltProblems that I had on the D411's were the feet that attach the plate to the motor were prone to break and the wiring from the switch to the motor (or maybe the switch itself)would go bad. They were also very hard to service if you wanted to split them and replace parts. Again, I haven't had any problems over the past year with the D26441k's that I bought.

I bought this for my wife to use on her restoration projects. She's only used it a couple time so far, but she really likes it. The dust collection function is awesome. It picked up 80% of the paint dust from her recent project. Additionally, even more important is the fact that the unit doesn't vibrate nearly as much as the Black and Decker she was using, which allows her to work for longer periods of time. We recommend spending the extra couple bucks. You can't go wrong with DeWalt!! Update***May 13, 2011...This sander still runs like new. It's been used pretty hard in the three years since purchase and we used it extensively on a recent chicken coop building project. Well worth a couple extra bucks for DeWalt quality and durability.

I did a little ressearch on all the sanders available and found this sander to be the best value and had the best amazon ratings so I purchased it. I am EXTREMELY happy I did so and believe this sander to be better than the others because it allows you to buy your own sandpaper and you can cut it to the square base of this sander (other sanders have round bases which is a problem because it makes you obligated to buy THEIR sandpaper so that it will properly fit the sander. With this sander, I bought sandpaper at Home Depot and it took me only a minute or two to cut the sandpaper purfectly to the base of this sander... Because the base of this sander is square and not round, it will be much easier in the future to buy my own sandpaper and cut it to spec. There were no problems here... I am not a very technical person.. I dont own a garage full of gadgets... so I love this sander because even an idiot can use it.I have read other reviews regarding the noise level of this sander and I disagree. All sanders are loud (its the nature of the beast) and I'm not going to worry about its loudness. I am more concerned of how well it works and whether it holds up over time. This square based Dewalt sander does.

Excellent tool. Exceeded my expectations for being able to sand everything from a 2x4 common lumber to fine-grained cedar. Easy change system from one grade of sandpaper to another. Great service from Amazon as usual!

I like the fact that you can cut a piece of sandpaper and attache it to the sander. Don't leave any corners of the underlying foam free, it will dissolve while sanding.... Take care of it and it will last.
