I had to weigh some logs that weigh a bit more than I do. They were too much for my hanging scale, so I pulled out the old bathroom scale and wrestled the logs onto that. I got my numbers, but I thought, “There has to be an easier way to do this.†The next time I was on Amazon, I saw this and snapped it up.They call it a “Crane Scale,†I’ll guess that is because it weighs things that are hanging under it, the opposite of a platform scale. I’m thinking if you want to weigh something that is 500 pounds, I’d suggest hanging it from a crane of some sort; trying to dangle it at arm’s length won’t work so swell. The scale came with a shackle that fits into the top of the scale, complete with a cotter pin to hold it in place, some rubber washers and an S hook that fits the bottom. I puzzled over the rubber washers and noticed they fit in the detents on the top of the scale. I put them inside the shackle, and they serve to keep it from rattling. Maybe that is what they were for, whatever. (There is a picture of the washers being used for that purpose on the Amazon listing.)I used this a few times and somehow between then and now, the S hook disappeared. Not everybody is as disorganized as I am but it would have been nice if there was some provision for having the lower hook latching in or something. No matter, I attached a carabiner, and I am back on the air again…. (Later,) the carabiner is a pain to engage with what you are measuring. I’ll have to see if I can find that hook. (Later than that,) The carabiner serves to hold an industrial hook I had lying around. The hook weighs quite a bit but the tare correction feature of the scale allows compensating for that.I was looking for something to measure and it occurred to me that the gym has lots of weights with numbers on them that are … something like their pounds. I took the scale to the gym, strung it up on one of the exercise machines and suspended the 50-pound kettlebell which read 49.77 pounds. The 45-pound kettlebell weighed 46.64 pounds. Together, they weighted 96.05, not the expected 96.41, “Hey, wait a second.†The Amazon posting says it measures in 0.1kg increments and has 0.1% accuracy. Hooboy, If all measurements are plus or minus 0.1kg (0.22 pounds) and I was plus with the individual pieces and minus on the sum, the numbers work out but this got me questioning the accuracy of the scale. I carried the 50-pounder to the doctor’s office style balance scale that I use to weight myself and it read 48.75 pounds, “Aaah, that thing is waaay off.†I got to looking at the balance scale and noticed the marking “Not legal for trade†which means the numbers will be close but there are no guarantees. So, I hauled the 50-pounder to the electronic bathroom scale I have never quite believed, and it read 49.75 pounds. Now I am even more suspicious. Nothing else would do but to take the 50-pounder into the women’s locker room scale (after knocking on the door and yelling “Yoohoo! Is anybody here?â€) and it weighed 49.75 pounds. The doctor’s scale I have been trusting for years is waaay off and the Amazon “Digital Mini Crane Scale,660lb Capacity†is right. This had the added bonus of me getting more exercise than I have had in quite a whileThis led me to haul all kinds of weights over to the scale and to mix and match to get an idea if the Amazon “Digital Mini Crane Scale,660lb Capacity†was consistent. After measuring combinations from 5 pounds to 265 pounds, I found the scale measured within 0.29% (not the stated 0.1% but not far off). I was not quite as diligent as I might have been keeping track and correcting for tare weights, but I was pretty close. If you are going to use this “For Trade,†I am not sure if that would be sufficient or not but for my purposes, that’s fantastic.A few observations,- It appears to measure in kg which are converted to pounds or newtons. As the scale is making up its mind about the weight, it bounces around a bit, always by about 0.22 lbs.- If you measure below 220 lbs (as in 100 kg), it gives two digits after the decimal and above 220 lbs, it gives one. That goes along with measuring in kg. These numbers are a bit hokey since they are plus and minus 0.22 lbs, anyway. Is that a problem? No.- One button is used for both Tare and Hold. When I wanted to set tare, it would hold and the other way around. I imagine there is a trick to using this, I have just not figured it out.- I already said the S hook disappeared on me, maybe that is something to think about.

Entire housing is metal alloy, very strong. 660lb weight rating seems reasonable given the strength of the scale housing.Included shackle is secured using thread with a securing pin included, rubberized inserts are included to dampen sounds and friction between the top shackle and the scale.Includes 3 AA batteries. Battery cover is secured with a phillips screw.Display is nicely backlit and easily readable.Does not automatically turn on when under load, must turn on using the button.Adjustable measurement units of kg, lbs, or newtons.During testing, it measured accurately with a margin of error of around .1lbs from weights 25-90lbs. However, at 10lbs the error margin was around .5lbs.Impressed with the accuracy. I will be using this in shop regularly and have no doubt it will be durable.
