Trash compactors have predictable failure modes.Usually the first is the gears under the unit break. These are easily replaced by laying the empty unit over and accessing her underthings. Simple handtools to R & R. (Don't over tighten the chain when reassembling. Installing new gear allows amount of tension on chain). The second most common failure is this switch. If the unit runs on, not shutting off, reaching the top of the cycle with a thump, thump, thump, it's usually this switch that failed. Two screws to pull off the front panel, then remove the top. Switch is readily accessible for R & R. Ten minute job (only need to pull the compactor out about 1/2 way to service. If the switch fails to fix, only other possibility is the front console switch assembly has failed. (Only held on by two screws). Fix it yourself and save money. Common tools only needed.

It was exactly what I needed to repair my 35 year old trash compactor. The ram wouldn't go all the way up on one side so we took it apart and noticed that the clip was broken on the directional switch. This was a genuine part, it was cheaper than any place else and worked perfectly. Saved us $1300.00 if we had to buy new.

My trash compactor is over 35 years old, and a part on it failed recently. Rather than dish out 1700 bucks for a new one I decided to fix it. Since it was so old I decided to replace quite a few of the parts including the pinion and drive gear, the chain, the power nuts, the drive screw gears, the thrust bearings, the ram pads, and this switch. So the switch is an easy replacement, you just disconnect four (or five?)wires remove two screws and then replace the switch and the wires, it could not be easier. The old switch was still working but I figured what the heck I’m over hauling this thing why not put in a new one. Of course all of us DIYers know that sometimes newer parts aren’t made to the same quality standards as the older ones and for all I know maybe I should’ve kept the old switch! Well, if it fails I’ll come back and make an edit. But the machine is back in action, my wife is happy, and I am satisfied.
