Why do you need a surface marker buoy (SMB) when diving?
- A surface marker buoy is an invaluable tool for any diver. The SMB shows boats that there are divers in the water and helps your own boat spot you as you ascend from a dive.
- Even non-dive boats will understand this signal. If you ascend without an SMB you put yourself at risk of injury. If there is no boat around to pick you up, the safety buoy/SMB will help to gain their attention. Divers also use SMBs to note their position during a drift dive.
Over-Pressure Valve
- A dump valve will allow any excess air to escape, preventing the SMB from bursting
2-Way Oral Inflation Valve
- Open-end designs are mostly used in DSMB where one end is sealed while the other end is open where the size of the opening fits the mouthpiece of your second stage

How Do You Inflate Surface Float Signal Marker Tube? 2-Way You Can Choose!
- Open the bottom of the surface marker buoy, breathe out a few times until the buoy partially inflates and tugs upwards on your hands, but avoid adding so much air that you cannot maintain buoyancy.
- An SMB with a tube that's open on the bottom can be inflated by adding air from the second-stage regulator (or octopus regulator) into the tube. Simply invert the regulator beneath the open tube and depress the regulator purge button briefly.

The SMB works really well with AAS inflating but I haven’t used the oral inflate yet. After 2 weeks of daily use, the Velcro closure is pulling from the seam a bit.

I ordered one a couple of months ago and it works perfectly. I went to purchase another and leaks at overpressure valve. Returned and replaced and leaks same place. Returned and again leaks same place. Possibly a bad batch, but leaving overall three stars. I have no issues with build quality as of yet, just the leaky valves. Hopefully this oversight is corrected, but for bow i will be purchasing my other SMB from another supplier.

This SMB is a little bit larger than I expected, which is actually great. I used to dive without an smb, and learned the hard way how easy it is to lose the boat at sea. I was very lucky. Having this big sucker in my pack is now a must.

I use this for freediving in the Puget Sound. The color is bright and eye catching and contrasts well. The valves function well and it holds air at least for the four or five hours I'm in the water. The issue I have had is that the weight in the base is too light and the whole marker just falls over and floats on its side. Tying one of my 1lb diving weights to it corrects this, but it really should come with the appropriate amount of weight to keep it upright.
