I have always kept these from old radiators because they like to fail at the most inconvenient times: Like last Wednesday (100+ degrees and my son's birthday) in the the WalMart parking lot at 5:30 PM. The rapidly growing puddle gave it away. I left a steady trail of coolant to the auto parts store because I had already used my spare in another vehicle and WalMart does not stock these.I explained to the kids what was going to happen and that complaining would be OK, because I would be under the hood for the next half hour. Naturally, the handle part popped off and left the body and stem inside of the radiator. The radiator comes out easy in my GMC, but I ended up pushing the remaining pieces into the radiator because the shaft of the valve keeps the retainer from being compressed and I was in a big hurry. The new one snapped into place; and after having the kids dig out every hidden bottle of aquafina we were outta there and eating cake and ice cream by 7 o' clock.The next day I changed the thermostat and replaced the coolant because thermostats usually don't do well after a super-heated steam bath in an engine with coolant draining. Aside from that, the thermostat may have been a contributor to the conditions that caused the drain cock to blow it's top.For what it's worth; keep spares for the little things that can leave you stuck in a bad place.V8..
