I purchased the SH400 WiFi versionWhy I purchased: not that you may care but it helps in understanding my selection :). My gas fireplace had an existing remote. Battery operated and it began to fail causing the flame to go out within a few minutes. I have slowly turned the house into a smart home (which is a blessing and a curse especially when my wife ends up fighting with Alexa to turn something on!). Anyway this unit looked like it would do what I wanted - turn the fireplace on and off with Alexa. What’s in the box: Not sure why but I was expecting a large box for this unit - nope - it’s a relatively small box. About a third of a shoe box. Inside is a wiring harness for all fireplace controls, the power supply cord for the controller and a 120v splitter in case you only have one outlet under the fireplace. They also send a manual - but really I did not need it and will explain below.Installing: Note - my fireplace had a 2 outlet receptacle so I did not use the 120v splitter, also it had an existing remote and a blower. First without connecting anything I plugged in the power to the controller (not the AC plug), opened my smart life app and pushed the main power button on the controller. My smart life app immediately recognized the unit and began the addition process - I just followed the prompts on the app and voila, fireplace was added. All leads coming from the controller are clearly labeled where they go and give very clear instructions on how to connect. So my first connection was the signal wires for the gas controller. This was easy because I had the leads from my old remote. Just connected them to the labeled controller wires opened the smart life app clicked on fireplace hit the power and then increased the temp and poof! FIRE. Excellent. Now to figure out how to get the fan hooked up.At this point I DID NOT CONNECT the 110v wire as I was not sure if the controller leads would then have 110v (shock hazard). Rather than try to squeeze my pudgy hands into the back of the fireplace to reach the power leads to the blower, I simply purchase a female end of a 110v plug (Amazon for less than $4). I wired the controller wires to the female plug (yes I had to cut the ends off of the 3 controller wires) and then plugged the blower cord into it. NOW I plugged the 120v plug from the controller into the outlet. Back to the app, power on, temp up and poof! FIRE and WIND! The blower was now on. I also have a fan knob on my fireplace and I placed that on ‘Hi’ because the controller will now regulate the speed. Setting your manual knob any lower than the highest setting will limit the controllers ability to control the fan.The controller also comes with a temperature sensor and I simply ran the wire on the outside of the fireplace and mounted to the side trim. Wire is hidden by the trim and the sensor is small enough that it is not noticeable. This does not come with a separate remote, you use the app for that. The App: Most of our smart devices are on Smart life and the applications are very intuitive. The fireplace app has a large temp dial in the center of the screen that you just rotate to the desired temp. You can program it via a schedule set the +/- temp swings to control the room temp, set to C or F, if you click on the C/F you can also access the blower speeds. Very simple and intuitive. I did rename the device in the app to just ‘fireplace’ as the installed device name was something like ‘superkalafragalisticexpialodocious’.Alexa: our Smart Life skill is enabled on Alexa so as soon as the fireplace was connected in the Smart Life app Alexa recognized it and connected it in the device list. My wife likes to have the fireplace on in the morning as she has her tea and reads so I set up a routine in Alexa. My wife says ‘Alexa, fireplace on†and the routine turns the unit on and temp to 75. ‘Alexa, fireplace off’ turns the unit on and temp to 60, this way the unit is on and monitoring the room for the ambient temp. If it drops below 60F then it will turn on and heat the room to 60.Note that if you turn the main power off the unit is off and not monitoring the ambient temp.Alexa can not control the blower speed (at least from what I have seen so far) but if you set the fan speed to auto in the app and do not turn the main power off then it should be good to go - I am monitoring that now. If you turn the main power off it seems to reset the speed to low.Obviously this unit relies on WiFi and 120v power so if the power goes out and you want the fireplace to kick on (without blower obviously) you would still have to wire a mechanical thermostat and set it somewhere lower than your lowest temp that you have in the app. I have mine set for 50F, this way the app controls to 60f and above and if we are not home and the power goes out and then drops below 50 the mechanical (ie no power required) thermostat keeps the house above freezing.Hope this helpsEnjoy

Upon receipt I was surprised by how small and light this unit is. Connecting it to my millivolt fireplace and installing the Smart Life app were straight forward although I did have to watch a YouTube video first because the instructions were not quite clear enough. At this point I was able to successfully turn the fireplace on and off and fully control the automatic temperature range from my trusty iphone. So far, so good...Next I had to pair the included remote which was not as easy... The instructions require several steps to be followed exactly and it was challenging to identity and press the tiny buttons on the unit since by this point it was already mounted in the small dark area underneath the firebox. It took me several tries to get it right but but finally I am able to turn the fireplace on and off via the remote. Then, on to pairing it with Alexa which was much more difficult. There are no instructions for doing this included so it took extra time searching for proper information from multiple websites and a helpful video on YouTube (thank God for YouTube) before I was able to get everything properly configured. But after an hour or two I was finally in business. Now from anywhere in my home (I have three Echo devices) I can simply say "Alexa turn on the fireplace" and instantly it's running. Because I set a temperature range in Smart Life, it automatically turns off once the preset temperature is reached... No more getting the room too hot or having to manually turn the fireplace on if the room drops below the set range.All-and-all I REALLY like this unit along with all the convenience and efficiency it provides. It's easy to see how it will surely reduce my gas bills. The instructions however could be a LOT clearer and at a minimum, directions for connecting it to Alexa or other smart home systems should either be included or at least links added to sites where this information can be easily found. Perhaps I've been spoiled by how easy it was to set up my Echo devices (simply plug them in and follow the step-by-step instructions) but clearly pairing a simple on/off remote should NOT require four or five cryptic steps. Also the included remote temperature sensor that must be installed away from the hot firebox has a standard mini audio connection but the wire is only about 5 or 6 feet long making it harder to properly position without a stray wire hanging across the front of the fireplace. I asked if I could extend the wire with a standard male to female extension cable and surprisingly the answer is NO.Apparently increasing the wire length adds resistance to the cable which will cause incorrect temperature readings. It seems to me that this should be an easy fix by either adding a simple slide switch to the unit or by specifying the final extended cable length in the app.My experience suggests that you first read all of the included instructions CAREFULLY and then locate any required additional help you think you'll need to make sure you are clear in how to proceed with everything you will need to complete in order to get this unit up-and-running the way you want it to function.Once you get it running though, you're going to LOVE it!

This was great and so incredibly easy to install. It took one minute and no tools to install. It was so easy. Now it works freak and has the remote control for on off working again.

Muy interesante este artÃculo de mando a distancia, todavÃa no lo conecto porque me faltaron varios componentes, sugiero que vendan todo el kit completo, porque sin duda todos han de batallar igual

In an attempt to replace the original remote system on a 15 year old fireplace, I thought this was going to be a rough road to find something compatible. Wow, was I wrong, once you realize there are just 2 wires that you can hook up either way, you just need to insert the batteries in model and remote, hit the learn button and voila. Everything works. Amazing. Literally took 5 minutes. Highly recommend. Oh, and get the back lite version for sure. Super happy

Replaced a battery operated one, very happy to not have to change AA batteries every 3-4 weeks. Great purchase, easy to hook up and it’s still going strong after 3 months with NO issues.
