Includes mirror spotting template, center spots and instructions. A Cheshire eyepiece or Cheshire collimator is a simple tool that helps aligning the optical axes of the mirrors or lenses of a telescope, a process called collimation. It consists of a peephole to be inserted into the focuser in place of the eyepiece. Through a lateral opening, ambient light falls on the brightly painted oblique back of the peephole. Images of this bright surface are reflected by the mirrors or lenses of the telescope and can thus be seen by a person peering through the hole. A Cheshire eyepiece contains no lenses or other polished optical surfaces.

You can make something yourself in 10 minutes that will do everything this thing does.Does it work... Yup, very nicely. You're paying for aluminum and paint. And thats fine if you're really into pretty things. $78 is madness.If you have even baseline DIY skills you could just drill a 1/8 hole in the center of an old 2in dust cap and have the exact same thing. This has the reflector sticker on the inside which is quite helpful, but you can get that stuff cheap too.In fact I have a dust cap with a hole in it from when I didn't have enough extra cash to justify this item... And... It works exactly as well. There is no magic to centering a hole. If you're able, do that and put that $78 toward a nice filter of some sort. Don't get newbie scammed like I did.It's a lovely hunk of metal with a hole in it, but that is all it is.

It was out of concentricity so useless to use for collimation. Too bad.
