Great little light meter. Measures light levels just as well as my exfo. Levels matched when comparing. Would recommend getting this just for a quick check..

We have had multiple direct single-mode fiber optic cables to remote facilities for about 25 years. They have just worked, with no downtime. We have not needed any fiber tools because we haven't had any problems. Recently we tried to upgrade one of them from 1Gb to 10Gb and it will not work. Put the old stuff back and it works. After trying many things, I bought a couple of these testers. It showed much reduced light levels at one end of one of the fibers in the pair. Then, using the visible fault locator, we saw a lot of light spillage into the patch panel at one end of that fiber. It appears we have a bad connection in the patch panel. We have a contractor coming in to look at that. Heck, this problem could have been there all along and we just never knew, because the old media converters were more forgiving. Having never had to address fiber issues, I never knew anything about any tools to work on them. I just assumed the tools would be very expensive. I was pleasantly surprised to be able to buy these testers and some fiber patch cables to use with them for a very reasonable amount. Instead of spending a lot of money hiring a contractor to just test the fibers only to find no problem, I was able to tell administration that we have a problem that needs to be fixed. No problem hiring a contractor now!

I found it very intuitive to use for testing fiber optic cable. The backlight is a nice touch.*Edit: I bought a second one for some additional testing and was disappointed to see that the quality is pretty inconsistent. One I got sent looks like a generic copy of the one pictured. The new one has a washed out LCD screen that is difficult to read and just doing a quick test between the two of them shows that they pick up different values for the same signal...I changed my rating from a 5 to a 3.. They're good enough for what I am testing but I would be wary of these for anything where you need accuracy or consistency.

The RJ45 is lame, I will use my old school Microtest, yes, Microtest. The VFL works. Will test Thursday for loss.. better be -13 to -23 on incoming feed from aerial hub.FOA CFOT
