Choosing the Correct Filter Size

stack of green frame 16x20x1 filters showing nominal and actual size being organized by employee

Nominal Size vs. Actual Size

The nominal size is a shorthand number rounded to the nearest whole or half inch, normally in a larger font (ex: 16 x 20 x 1). Whereas the actual size is an exact measurement, normally in a smaller font, that depicts the filter's precise dimensions (ex: 15.50 x 19.50 x 0.75). All filters have both.

Measuring Your Air Filter

If your current air filter does not have a dimension listed on the frame, use a tape measure to record the width x length x depth to find the actual size. Then round these measurements up to the nearest inch to find a corresponding nominal size, which will be easier to locate when searching online.

  • To maintain a healthy lifestyle, as breathing dirty air can put you at risk to develop asthma, allergies, and other respiratory ailments. Plus, old filters can cause system defects which may lead to unwanted expenses via energy costs and repairs.

  • We generally recommend replacing your filter every 90 days to keep your system running efficiently and air clean. But this is subject to change based on filter size and variable factors for pet owners, allergy sufferers, homes with children, etc.

  • Most of our filters are universally compatible and will work with any furnace, air conditioner, heat pump, or HVAC system as long as you choose the proper size. But if you see a specific brand name on a listing, make sure it matches your unit model.

  • This varies for every customer depending on specific needs such as the number of vents in your home. However, our selection includes package quantities that range from 1 to 12 filters, so no matter what your situation may be, we've got you covered.

  • After finding the right size, turn off the power supply and remove the cover from your intake vent before taking out the old filter. Then just insert your new filter to match the direction of air flow, replace the cover, and turn the power back on.

These function well as replacement air filters for a Carrier HVAC. They were well made and functioned appropriate for the 6 month usage window.

I have two new Bryant systems and replace the filters very 3-4 months. I was encouraged to use a MERV 8 as it reduces the resistance on the air flow and helps improve any condensation problems on the coils. This filter does the job.The Bryant takes a 5 inch filter. Everyone who uses filters will tell you the size on the filter is not absolute.. There are two sizes noted. The size on the filter and the actual size. I found that the 4 inch filters from most brands were too large and tight. If I went to the 4 inch size, they let too much air flow through the sytem. This filter fits without a problem, It is somewhat tight, but it slides in with only a little pressure and makes a tight fit.If it needs to be removed,, the cardboard cross bars will catch on the vent and tear making the filter useless. So, on removal, it is damaged and over.I do feel the density and thickness of the cardboard construction is less than that on the Honeywell filters. On arrival, the filters need to be handled carefully as they are subject to damage from a slight amount of pressure.Overall, they do the job, fit well and provide an economical way to replace the filters.

My local hardware stores didn't carry the MERV 8 filters only the higher rated ones. My HVAC guy said the higher rated ones are too restricive and cause the system to work harder than necassary and to use the MERV 8 filters.

I purchased MERV8 filters to reduce the wear on my furnace blower. The 5” thick filter is a perfect, snug fit! I am so pleased.(Previously, I was using 3M Filtrete filters. They were just a fraction too thick, so the edges got crumpled when I forced it into the filter cabinet. Air could bypass the filter, and I was worried about bits of cardboard getting sucked into the blower.)

Love these low merv filters. They fit great and don't restrict air flow too much.

The filters arrived damaged (crumpled in on one side) despite the exterior box looking fine. Either they were placed in there damaged or squished in to fit. They're also larger than the other filters I typically buy, and only fit because they were alrrady smashed in on one side. I won't be ordering these again for obvious reasons. I probably should have sent them back but don't have the time. Cautionary note for others.
