I use this mallet for alignment of parts and the softening of leather before stitching. Some parts and leather need the persuasion of impact without damaging of the application of force. This can be done with other devices but I like the fit and feel of a rawhide mallet. Used properly (not as a hammer substitute), a mallet is the appropriate tool for applications where the impact will not cause marring nor deform a metal tool. It also reduces the force for a cutter, like a chisel, and that gives better control.

Nicely made, made in the USA, good for leather work. Would've easily been five stars but it's kinda light compared to what I expected, which was a little more heft. Overall, a very nice mallet.

Basically I had an almost finished knife that I couldn't shim temper straight, so it needed to be reheat treated. I couldn't hit it with my regular hammer because that would leave a dent in the surface.So this rawhide hammer is the perfect choice. I heated up the knife, beat it straight, and left no marks on the surface, then requenched it.

My husband decided to learn how to make rings. He purchased a dapping block and all the other tools one would need to form metal to make rings. When it came to the fine touches of molding he started having issues. Every tool he would use either chipped the metal or broke the tool itself. So began my search. I looked all around town at local hardware stores with no luck. I called a jeweler and told him my delima. He informed me of the exact tool my husband needed, which brought me to Amazon. This tool turned out to be an amazing gift. It works perfectly and will be used for years to come.

Great mallet. Accidently ordered and paid for 2 mallets (my fault - added 1 from my computer and 1 from my tablet = 2 = lesson learned) however such a nice mallet that I have no regrets and kept both.:)
