1. This is a less expensive alternative to the subzero branded cartridges and should function equivalently.2. There is NO CARBON in the cartridge.3. Inside the cartridge is a mirrored chamber with a UV-C bulb surrounded by small loose glass tubes (see image), which is why the cartridge rattles (this is normal). The bulb appears to be very sturdy, but some of the small tubes can crack or the edges can get ground up during shipping which can lead to some "dust" shaking out. Look up "rebuilding a subzero air filter" on YouTube for full details.4. You can TEST THE CARTRIDGE to be sure the bulb is intact: With the fridge door open swing up the air filter cover; DON'T eject the cartridge; press the door/light button (so the fridge thinks the door is closed) which will turn off the main light, activate the UV-C bulb (you'll hear it pop on like a fluorescent bulb), and you should hear a fan kick on to blow air through the cartridge; look for a bluish glow (see image), which indicates that the bulb is functional; BE CAREFUL since UV-C light is dangerous to skin and eyes.

A solid choice - a domestically produced replacement part with all the performance of the original equipment at substantial savings from the manufacturer's replacement part. It's one thing to pay through the nose for razor blades after getting the razor for free! This isn't that! For as much as I paid for my Sub-Zero side-by-side refrigerator, I should get free air and water filters for as long as I own the product. The last thing I desire is to be gouged by the manufacturer's exorbitant margins for replacement parts. This purchase is a good alternative for those with my sentiments.

Products fit up we’ll. Compared side by side to Subzero product, appears identical. Fridge reset to 100% of filter capacity. Will update if it fails in odor containment. Time will tell
