I got this to use with my home brewed kombucha; overall it's very easy to use and is entirely hand operated. The reason I gave it 4 stars is because it's rather difficult to clean, and the mesh part is especially tough to get clean. I usually just siphon some sudsy water and then clean water, so it works, but to be fair it's a tube and I can't think of a good way to actually clean it.

The first issue is that the hose is wrapped in a fairly tight coil when packed so that when unpacked, it remembers being curled. That makes it not want to go to the bottom of the liquid. I fixed that by fashioning a holder out of a sterilized coat hanger. The rigidity of the coat hanger wire allowed me to place the strainer where it needed to be.Unfortunately, what I was trying to filter had way too many particulates to be effective. The strainer clogged right away. I ended up making my own strainer out of plastic screening from fruit bags I purchased years ago. I think it has a mesh size of about 1/16 inch or so, which allowed larger particles than this strainer allows through to pass. Lesson learned: I should have put my must in a fruit bag so I could more easily squeeze out the juice like I did last time. The real problem, though, is that the strainer cannot be disassembled, unless I missed something (there were no instructions). That means particles can get into the strainer and then are nearly impossible to clean out. I spent a good 20 minutes or so using a brush that came with my juicer and a toothbrush to clean the filter. Then I used my kitchen hand sprayer to spray into the filter from all angles with the opening held downward in order to empty out the particulates. One final thing. Although the strainer is easily removed from the hose, the pump part seems to be glued to the hose. For reasons I won't get into here, I needed to separate the hose from the pump. I resorted to cutting the hose. Now what if I want to use the pump again? I'd have to figure out some way of splicing it back in. I think I'll just use my vacuum pump instead.

Not a very good item. It did function the first time I used it, but very slowly, which was not unexpected given other reviews. However, the one-way valve broke or something, and I couldn't get it to work the second time I tried.

This product is amazing. It made my life so much easier. I bought this to use as a syphon for my homemade wine making operation. The filter fits into a standard carboy opening. I inserted it into the carboy, squeezed the pump part twice and away it went. Did its job perfectly. The filter prevented any sediment being sucked up during the racking process and to my surprise it got every drop of wine out of the jug even when the liquid level dropped below the top of the filter. It is super easy to clean, I just filled a bucket with sanitizer and water and went through the same process. Inserted filer, pumped, and let the water flow through the syphon until it was clean. For this price and the amount of trouble it saves you I cannot recommend it enough. Wish I had found it sooner

This device and similar devices work with a bladder in the hand pump area that lets air go out but only a tiny amount back in. I tested it 1 day before (homebrew) bottling day and it worked like a charm. The next day, it conked out after only 1 bottle. Air kept coming in from the flexible plastic area right above the hand pump and it would stall out. So angry and no homebrew shop nearby. If you are still inclined to buy this product, know that the screening cylinder will pass through a 2.5 gallon carboy but you should put some silicone tape around it because the tubing can slide right off. You can also use silicone tape and 1/4" tubing to extend the end near the hand pump down to the bottom of your bottles.
