This kit works great! My daughter has been complaining that her hair doesn't feel clean after shampooing. She said she needs a different shampoo. Then it dawned on me that my hair has been feeling the same way. I told my husband that I think we have hard water and something is wrong with our water softener. He replied, "No, our water is not hard, it is soft" HmmmmA friend stopped by last week and said, "what did you do to your hair??? It is lighter than I have ever seen it and it looks like you have Orange highlights!!" I had not done anything, but I did notice that my hair color was a bit different lately (I am a brunette) and didn't know why. She looked closer and felt the ends of my hair and said, "you have hard water".So, I went on Amazon to order the testing strips, but read the many reviews and finally decided this kit would be more accurate than the strips. I received it the next day. Sure enough, it took over 20 drops for the mixture to turn blue. Yep, our water is HARD!The company that installed our water softener came out today. The kit he brought with him was almost identical to this one. I watched him and it took 25 drops for the water to turn blue~ the softener is not working at all. He took the unit with him to do repairs. " Rebed & Valve Repair". The parts are under warranty, so we just have to pay for service & labor charges. He will be back Friday with the repaired water softener. The bad news: The labor and service charge is going to be over $550!! Wow, that seems high for the Service Charge and Labor Only!! Ugh :(However, I do highly recommend this test kit. Instructions on the box were clear and easy to follow. Maybe if we had bought this test earlier to use on occasion, we could saved some money in repairs. After it is fixed, I will think I will continue to use this kit on a Monthly basis to make sure the softener continues to be working as it should. ;).

Bought this after I installed my water softener from springwell so I can test my water after about 2 weeks of use. Used it and it worked perfect and so easyyyyy to use!!! Thank you again.

I have tried a bunch of testing strips and they were all junk. I finally got this test kit and got my water hardness dialed in. Told my neighbor, he tried it and he bought one too. Easy to use and accurate. This is what many water companies use.

Like a couple others mentioned, I was using the kit and I couldn't get the water to turn blue no matter how many drops I put in. That was when I tested the water from the outdoor hose direct from the well. So then I tested our softened water from the tap in the house. It turned blue after 1 drop of the test liquid. So I knew the test kit worked. Someone recommended diluting the test sample with half softened water and half well water, so I did. The water turned blue with 17 drops. So you need to double that number since the sample was diluted by half. My hardness is 34. Which is just about what it was when it was tested by a professional 5 years ago. The kit only works for water that is 30gpg or hardness or less. So the diluting trick is a life hack to allow you to test water above 30gpg. Once you know that, it's a good kit.

We had trouble getting soft water right after the company replaces our water softner tanks. Now we can check the tanks and get replacements immediately we get improper tanks. This is the same system that the Culligan water softner company uses.

I ran across this item on a Reddit thread about water softeners and decided to try this out prior to buying a softener. I assumed I had hard water from our well because of a little brown staining in sinks and the toilet along with water spots in the vehicles after washing them. Turns out that the water is really not that hard and I likely just of a little iron in the water. The test was easy to use and there are plenty of chemicals that you could probably run the test 50-100 times.

As a former analytical chemist I really like the titration method of this set and the precision it achieves in determining water hardness. I bought one of these in 2017 and routinely use it to determine the hardness of the water in my Palm Springs home and verify that my water softener is working. Last week I just arrived for the winter and ran the test which showed the water to be soft without titration. I assumed it was not working so I checked the raw water prior to conditioning which also showed 0 grains. I looked at the two reagents and noted they expired in 2021. Got a fresh new kit from Amazon and repeated the tests - raw water was 5 grains and softened was 1 grain. Note to check the expiration date on your kit since it does make a difference.

The written instructions inside box are Spanish, French and another which I don’t recall. English instructions are on the box side panel, so don’t throw the box away. It’s very easy to see the sample change from pink to blue, just be sure to swirl after each drop. After testing the softened water rinse the mixing bottle out with unsoftened water, otherwise the next sample will start out blue. This happened to me and had me frustrated, so I went back and read reviews and found one that said she needed to use a cue tip to remove all traces of softened water. I found that rinsing well with unsoftened water worked great for removing those traces. As others have said there is plenty supplies for many many test. This kit will last a very long time.
