We are a Fish Farm and run lots of water tests. When we need a fast test, we use API test kits to get quick readings. Not that accurate, but good enough for quick tests. Like a quick test of Ammonia in fish we just brought in from one of the ponds. Also use Hach Color Wheel test kits to get more accuracy. They work great. Cost more to run, but more accurate readings when we need them. Finally bought a Hach DR900 couple of months ago. This is much, much more accurate than the color wheel. The DR900 can read colors much, much better than a human. The cost for reagents is close to the color wheels. So at about the same cost, we can get super accuracy. Then for something like Copper Tests for 0.05 ppm reading. Can't get even close with the color wheel. But, get super accurate reading with the DR900. Able to tell the difference between 0.05 and 0.06 ppm. Conclusion: Yes, the DR900 is a high initial cost. But, when you need accurate readings. This is the way to go. And if you want to treat fish with Copper, this is the ONLY way to get the accurate readings you need. Also, only a little bit of Nitrite can be bad for the fish. API test kit can not read below about 0.2 ppm Nitrite-ion. The Hach color wheel can read much lower than the API. And the DR900 can give a reading down in the 0.03 ppm range for Nitrite-N.Basically, when you need the accuracy, the DR900 is fantastic. Maybe more than a normal person may need. But, when running a Tropical Fish farm -- this works great for us.Jim
