Surprised Choice for Lining Hanging Baskets

The sphagnum moss is a good choice for lining hanging baskets. It is highly compressed so you’ll need to get it wet and let it expand. But it is better to have a liner in the frame to hold the moss in. You can use it for air layering to promote root growth. It is easy to work with and holds moisture so your plants will be low maintenance.

I grow most of our vegetables and herbs year around, and discovered that the soil in my pots was more alkaline than it should be. Most of the plants I grow require soil on the acidic side for microbes to break down nutrients into a usable form. My tomatoes and bell peppers were developing yellow spot on the leaves that I found out could be caused from lack of nutrients. Since I regularly supply these plants with nutrients, I knew that lack of nutrients wasn't the problem. With more research, I found out that microbes in the soil must break down nutrients in the soil in order for the plants to absorb them. For these microbes to do their job, the soil PH should be 6.2 to 6.8. My soil was 7.2.Since Sphagnum moss helps to lower the PH of the soil, I bought this product, and initially, wasn't impressed by the size of the package - it was really small. So, keeping an open mind, I put the small block in a 3 gallon tub and filled it half full of water. Within a couple of minutes, the block began to grow and continued growing. I moved it to a 5-gallon bucket and added more water. It continued to grow until it filled the bucket, but still, it was not all hydrated. So, I moved what was hydrated back into the 3-gallon tub and filled it. I added more water to the bucket, and this product filled the bucket by the time it was fully hydrated. So, my first suggestion would be to cut this block into at least 4 sections if you don't need a lot at one time. This sphagnum moss has very long fibers. It would work well for plants that grow in moss or possible for starting seedlings if mixed with perlite and vermiculite. This moss would also be excellent for air layering which is used to root cuttings on hard wood plants or trees to produce new plants. This is one purpose I plan to use it for.For my general purpose to mix it with soil, I have been breaking up the fibers to make them smaller in order to mix them into the soil. This should lower the PH in the soil and eventually the fibers will break down, but I prefer the sphagnum peat moss that is already broken into smaller pieces as it is easier to mix into the soil. I did find a few twigs in this moss, but not too bad for the amount of moss produced in this quantity. Personally, I wouldn't buy this moss again for my purposes, but it would work great for those growing orchids or other plants that grow in moss.At any rate, lowering the PH for my tomatoes, peppers, and even the veggie greens has had some exceptional results. My tomatoes are consistently producing much larger tomatoes and my pepper plants have a multitude of new flowers and developing peppers.I hope this review is helpful for you.

Honestly I knew it was going to come compressed, but I was shocked at how small the block was. It fit in my mailbox and I honestly didn’t even believe it was delivered because it was so small in the envelope that I didn’t think anything was in it. Then, I was afraid it wasn’t very much moss. But then I got it wet. It grew huge!I had more than enough moss for the things I wanted to do. It was also very easy to work with and easy to clean. Very good deal for the price.

It is as the title suggests when hydrating the 25QT I didn't think the comprised block would hold so much but it just kept on expanding. I'm pretty happy with the amount I got as it is more than enough. But the quality is a little rough since it does come with some twigs and other debris like leaves. That probably wouldn't be ideal if you were wanting to go for a more greenhouse or sterile environment, just a heads up.

I didn't realize that it came in blocks of 5. Which is nice. I chose to break one block into 2 pieces since I didn't know how this would expand. I'm glad I did. I only did 4 pots and had more than enough. When this stuff gets wet it is a lot. I plenty for the 4 pots I repotted my orchids with. This will last a while.

This is a good product for long staple Spaghnum moss. I use this type of moss for tropical/tree/garden seed germination, rooting balls, moisture holding with and topping soil mixes. The product I received had good expansion, but with non-Spaghnum debris. I had to remove what debris I could, but the debris did lead to rotting within the germination bed. I gave this product 3 stars for this reason, it could be a cleaner product. Small sticks, leaves, various detrius was found in the compressed block after soaking, it is impossible to remove prior to soaking and expanding block. I have purchased compressed spaghnum prior to this product that was 100% Spaghnum , no debris. If this product is soaked 2wks it will admit a distinct effluent smell, not the typical acidic spaghnum odor. The product has a "Made in China" label.

I use this To help keep humidity In with my Baby leopard tortoises, and in my baby snake hides.Wasn't exactly sure how to gauge how much I would get out of 4.4 lb, but just soaking one block was enough for me to do three of my baby tortoise cages, one of my snake hides, and still have a small black tote full of leftover. And that's without breaking the other two blocks down.If you're a reptile keeper And It's back in the Moss come I highly recommend this.
