these worked great - in the past I had rented some from the auto store the screws with pins and no center support - these felt more secure/safe as it has the support arm to hold the two screws in place. Also these have more of an acme screw thread with the threads protected from dirt - with the acme thread they seamed to compress faster. I think I put them on the wrong way - ie if something was to go wrong you want the spring to travel away from your body parts...But then again you still have to get the nut off the strut to remove the spring.

This tool is of pretty good quality and got the job done for me. My biggest complaint would be the diameter/size of the threaded/barrel portions of the tool. This would hit the sides of the spring, causing the engagement portions of the tool to want to slide off the end of the spring. It worked out but I had to be very careful to make sure the spring didn't slip off the end.

I bought these thinking they were gonna be cheaply made but in hopes I could get one use out of them. They worked perfectly, very easy to use and sturdy! I used them on my full sized pickup to upgrade my shocks. If you need a pair buy these, you will be happy you did.

I was able to disassemble my F150 strut with this without difficulty. I opted to use hand tools and found it very easy and safe.

I am going to explain how this product is made, how I prepared it for use, and how I used it. There are several sellers of this type of tool. I used this one so I do not know how others compare. This tool is built similar to 2 steel pipes sliding inside each other. I will refer to the pipes with the bolt head on the bottom. The inside pipe on the bottom( bolt head on the bottom) has a nut about 1" long machined to the bottom of the pipe. The top silver finger is attached by a 1/4 inches? rod extending through the pipe and the finger acting like a rivet. The silver fingers on this tool are forged and are rough finished. The outside pipe has two fingers one is threaded the other slides on the outside of the pipe and tightens using a jam nut. The bottom of the outside pipe has a bearing in it to let the bolt go through and rotate. This is a rough bearing and I greased it.I dismantled the tool to check all threads to make sure there were no burrs, left over cuttings, or messed up threads. The bolt threads are very coarse and the bolt is about 18 inches? long. The tool came with light oil on the threads. I saw not defects or tool cuttings. I greased all threads. For the bolt I greased the nut and bolt threads and screwed them together full length to get the threads all greased. I did this twice. I used an electric drill or ratchet type device to screw the bolt in and out while it was unloaded to get grease on all threads.I put together for a 2011 Toyota 4runner 4wd Dobinsons coilover shock and springs. The spring had a spring rate of 586 lbs and was 15 inches long, and 4.5 inches wide outside. For tightening the tool to compress the spring I used a 19mm socket, 1/2 inch ratchet doing 5-6 cranks on each compressor bolt at a time. I compressed the spring 3-3.5 inches to get the top mount on. At no time did I feel any binding or stress on the bolt threads compressing or decompressing the spring. Yes there was pressure on the bolt but none that was overly tight showing binding or excess tightness. I did this activity twice.Always when using a tool like this do not stand in front of the spring, wear safety glasses and be cognisant of your safety and others. This tool worked better than those long bolt tools with two fingered jaws and one fingered jaw. You see them for sale.I plan to use this tool again. I did not see any undo stress. How long will it last is unknown. It sure worked better than I expected.I forgot to mention that this item does not come with instructions for use.

After 4 uses, it stared to stripped the nut within. Scary, good thing there was not much load when one side failed. Works well though until this happened.

I have had problems with tool like this because of spring size on Honda/Acura springs. These worked very well and felt very secure. If you have had problems in the past with this theses will work very well for you.
