  • DRV8825 Stepper Motor Driver Module
  • 45 V maximum supply voltage
  • 4-layer, 2 oz copper PCB for improved heat dissipation
  • Can interface directly with 3.3 V and 5 V systems
  • Simple step and direction control interface

Description:
The DRV8825 stepper motor driver carrier is a breakout board for DRV8825 microstepping bipolar stepper motor driver. The module has a pinout and interface that are nearly identical to those of our A4988 stepper motor driver board, so it can be used as a higher-performance drop-in replacement for those boards in many applications. The DRV8825 features adjustable current limiting, overcurrent and overtemperature protection, and six microstep resolutions (down to 1/32-step). It operates from 8.2 ¨C 45 V and can deliver up to approximately 1.5 A per phase without a heat sink or forced air flow (rated for up to 2.2 A per coil with sufficient additional cooling).
Features:
* Simple step and direction control interface
* Six different step resolutions: full-step, half-step, 1/4-step, 1/8-step, 1/16-step, and 1/32-step
* Adjustable current control lets you set the maximum current output with a potentiometer, which lets you use voltages above your stepper motor rated voltage to achieve higher step rates
* 45 V maximum supply voltage
* Built-in regulator (no external logic voltage supply needed)
* Can interface directly with 3.3 V and 5 V systems
* Over-temperature thermal shutdown, over-current shutdown, and under-voltage lockout
* Short-to-ground and shorted-load protection
* 4-layer, 2 oz copper PCB for improved heat dissipation
* Exposed solderable ground pad below the driver IC on the bottom of the PCB
*Module size, pinout, and interface match those of our A4988 stepper motor driver carriers in most respects (see the bottom of this page for more information)

I bought 5 of these "DRV8825" step motor driver breakout boards. They all worked fine for me on 12V power, 16 micro-steps, and current limit set to 1 amp. However... you do need to set the current limit first thing, before trying to run the motor in your application. It appears that, as delivered, the current-setting potentiometer may be at some random position, which could easily be well above the max continuous amps/phase current specified for the motor or the DRV8825. If you just apply power without setting the current limit there's a good chance the current is set too high which will probably overheat the DRV8825 and fry it. I suspect this may be what's happening for some of the reviews where they report "the chip got hot after a few seconds and stopped working".Also, keep in mind the "DRV8825" chip supplied on these boards is a counterfit ''knockoff' of the actual TI part. It does appear to generally work OK for non-critical hobby use, but as reported in a couple of other reviews this knockoff chip does not meet many or all of the specifications of the TI part.Quick current set: Put the driver in your circuit, connected to the motor you are using. Apply power but don't try and make the motor move. Just measure the voltage on the metallic screw-top of the potentiometer. Current limit in amps = 2X the measured voltage. Example, if you measure 0.5 volts at the potentiometer the current limit will be set to 1.0 amps.

I’ve gone through all 5 and ordered more. I use them in Arduino projects. Makes stepper motor control SO easy.

Awful quality! Only 1 out of 5 came in sealed packaging — the rest were just thrown into a plastic bag. 3 out of 5 were non-functional, with the current limiter screw either jammed or stripped beyond use. On top of that, 3 out of 5 had bent legs, looking like they had already been used and ripped straight off a breadboard.

I'm using these in my projects now instead of the 4988 chips because you can get 1/32 stepping with these and it works. Do put the heatsink on because these do get hot. The labeling is a bit harder to read than the 4988 boards.

I use these with a CNC shield v3. They are very easy to set the current to your desired value and are perfect for a small CNC. I have mine set at 1.2 amps. I give this a 4star because one of the DRV8825 I recieved only goes in one direction. I only needed 4 for my project and the price is very good.

A great upgrade from the a4988 and much more power with smoother operation. These have performed flawlessly for me.

These drivers are working well. Packaged well and arrived quickly. I would buy again if needed.

My stepper motors are rated for 1.8A, so I calibrated one of the DRV8825 to 90% of that for safety: 1.8 x 5 x 0.1 x 90% = 0.81VHowever, it was heating up and died with a bright flash in under half hour in a hold mode.I also found it very noisy at 1/8 step, while the other DRV8825 I have are much quieter at this setting.Radiators have a different (thin and white, not black and goopy) adhesive and separate from the chips without any effort at all, so I am not sure if they are any good. Though I can be wrongDisappointed. 1 star and consider returning. Will test another one and decideUPDATE: Second DRV8825's connectors are soldered at an angle to such a degree that one side misses the headers on the PCB completely. Poor quality control
