I got this to mark up roofs which these soapstone aren't good for, however for brick, masonry, metal surfaces, and other similar materials its just great. I've marked up brick, blocks, metals, asphalt, and the soap stone works well on it. The included metal holder keeps your hands clean and you can easily extend or retract it as necessary. Likely a must have for welders, sometimes I just jot down notes onto something when I'm working in a field somewhere.

It arrived a bit broken but what do you expect, its a soft stone that you ordered on amazon so quit your crying. It does what it does.

It's not bad considering it was less than five dollars and included four extra pieces of 5" X 1/2" X 3/16" soapstone in addition to the one that came loaded in the holder. The holder works okay, but the thin metal edges seem a little sharp and it does tend to slip closed occasionally if too much force is applied when marking metal for cutting. Not a big deal for me though because I often just prefer to cut the end of the soapstone at a 45-degree angle and use it in my hand without the metal holder. For what it cost I can’t really complain. I think the pieces of soapstone alone were probably worth the purchase price.

I spent a little more on the Hobart, hoping it would be better. Was disappointed to find 3 of the 5 soapstone pieces broken on arrival. Out of the box, the holder itself is quite difficult to move, and the lock does not inspire confident in terms of being a positive "click". I found that the slide frees up with use.Overall, it's OK. Decent value. I would pay 4x for something that is really well-made like a carbide scribe. Maintain low expectations and you may be satisfied.

The quality of the holder and stone seems durable. Wish the refills wore stored in a plastic container, since they are very brittle and can break easily which is normal. Get a means to contain the spares or be left with split pieces.

Got the Hobart to replace a more expensive soapstone holder that fell apart. Despite its actual price by inexpensive, the holder’s quality in not. It works better than the expensive one ever did.
