This HONBO kite string spool arrived yesterday and I wanted to provide some comments regarding it, even if I am unable to make good functional use of it right now due to having very cold weather with white stuff forecast for the afternoon. The sizing is pretty good at 7 inches in diameter. With the strong string currently on the spool that means that for every revolution of the winding spool you will be spooling in (or out) about 20 inches. So much faster than a little bobbin of string that usually comes with a kite. The 1000 feet of multi strand string spooled onto this is really strong. The string spools through a metal eyelet to allow it to uptake the string and evenly spool it onto the 1" wide outside collection ring. There is a small knob on that collection ring to assist with rapidly spooling it in or out safely, and that knob can be locked down into the inner hub to securely lock it when you have as much length out as you wish to have. You don't have to keep holding the knob all of the time you are flying. The bearings between the central hub and the collection bobbin ensure that it will turn freely and wind very smoothly. You won't be fighting any resistance with those unless you take it to the beach and bath it in sand. You can see in the photos that my grasp on the molded handgrip through the center hub is pretty compressed. I could use this but it wouldn't be real comfortable for very long. My wife's smaller hands fit much better, and since this is eventually going to my 9 year old grandson the problem will be resolved. His hand will fit the molded form much more comfortably. This ring appears to be designed to be held in the left hand and winding with the right hand. That works smoothly for me. If you are left handed ?I have another grandson who is left handed and usually is holding everything opposite of me. This spool can be held with the right hand and wound with the left, however doing that with the string wound as it is would mean that you would be winding towards yourself. That may be fine and may be the direction you would normally be winding. It is certainly functional. However if you were uncomfortable doing it that direction then you could always unspool the line and wind it on the other direction. There is only 1000 feet of it, just under 1/4 mile, so keep it well organized if you do that 🤓. Happy Kiting !

I love to fly kites on a rainy day. The starter spools with most kites are not very usable. The HONBO Kite String Spool can be used with any size kite. The spool has a slots for the opposite hand with all 5 fingers to fit into and grip to hold the spool securely. This helps maintain a firm grip under sudden jerky high wind gusts. It is very comfortable to hold for adult hands. To manage the kite string, the large spool uses a hand crank to uncoil and coil line. The crank is triangular shaped design is also comfortable to hold and gives greater control so it will not slip out of my hands. The crank folds away for relatively flat storage. The spool assembly has internal roller bearings around the multipoint crank assembly versus a bunch of loose ball bearings.The yellow kite string is high quality with great strength. The kite hook, is very stiff spring metal that requires a lot of grip strength to depress to open or clothes. I bring a pair of needle nose pliers often if I can't undo the hook to attach or remove the kite.My only other issue is the spool of kite string was not properly spooled. It is very loose and one of the loops is sticking out and I have to unspool the length of string to that point of the loose line in order to wind it back securely. That can only be done when using the kite to avoid knotting up the line on the ground.

I must admit I wasn't quite prepared for a kite reel to be so advanced, especially at the price. I was very impressed by the ball bearing rolling quality of the reel, the ergonomic handle and way the spinning handle tucks away. It is truly for the advanced kite flyer!I feel like a boss using this reel while flying my Delta Wing kite but I have to say there were a few times when it got away from me and the string can go flying! It takes a certain finesse and it wouldn't hurt to brush up on your knotting skills before going out with this in the field!It reminded me a bit of a fishing reel how there was this little guide that would help the string load onto the reel, however, there's precious little from preventing the string from getting out of control should you not keep the tension on it. Think of it as a fishing reel that's always set to "cast".With this, I can't recommend you get this for someone under 12, say. I have two sons and I know if they get frustrated with something, they'll just give up on it and I don't want to give them something that will kill their interest. I do have a proper fishing reel on a shortened rod which I use for kite flying. That setup doesn't have the performance of this one does, however, especially when it comes to reeling the string back in.I give it 4 stars because while it is a very nice product, I don't think it's for everyone. I managed to fly kites for 50 years without something this nice.It is competitively priced with other kite reels which appear to be the identical product but not a better price. I would also exercise caution in giving it to someone who's not mature or who isn't determined to finesse it.

My husband bought an expensive, fancy kite for his retirement. He said that this reel is just the ticket for that kite. It’s comfortable to hold, easy to use and comes with 1000’ of good quality string. That makes it a good value for the money. It is well made, with no manufacturing defects, and reels in and out easily. Spring is right around the corner here, and he’s looking forward to giving it a try.

I recently used this kite string spool, and it really made a difference during our kite-flying day. The spool is easy to hold and turns smoothly when letting out or reeling in the line.
