Moderate Installation.
Some drilling is required to complete a firm installation. Tools require a drill with a 9 mm drill bit, a rivet gun, and a 6 mm metric mandrel.
Only 4 steps for a simple operation.
- First, mark the positions on the tailgate plate with a marking pen according to the locating paper.
- Second, use a drill tool kit to drill four mounting holes on the surface.
- Third, install supplied rivet nuts with riveting nut gun tool.
- At last, bolt on the storage box onto the tailgate. It should take about 2 hours or less based on your operation skill.

This thing is more robust (and heavier) than it looks. There's plenty of space inside--enough that I was able to store my backpacking tent, headlamps, etc.The kit comes with brackets which you are supposed to attach to the tailgate with rivnuts, but I found that I had enough room to bolt it directly to the back of the tailgate in my TJ to save about 1.5" space.I'm tempted to bolt a Molle panel to the front door of the lock box to make use of that 1.5" that I saved, it' seems plenty strong enough.

The box is built very good and sturdy. The lock is cheap and will need replaced with a better one. I added weather stripping inside the door because of constant rattling while driving. Overall, it's a good addition for a jeep. Be prepared to upgrade the lock and add weather stripping to stop the door from rattling.

First of all to install this you’ll need a rivet nut tool. You cannot mount the mounting bars to the inside of the tailgate without this tool. Secondly, the devil’s in the details and they’re missing here. Even when installed properly driving down a smooth paved road the rattling between the box and the lid will rattle your brain. There’s no weather stripping between the door and the interior so it vibrates incessantly and will drive you nuts. You need to purchase some automotive weather stripping and install it along the top where the door meets the box. This is really something the manufacturer should include but I guess is too cheap to include. And finally, the locking latch is worthless. Road vibration alone will cause the locking tab to bend outward and loosen the door. You can bend it back and it works until the next time you hit the road where it will bend out again. There’s basically no security with this box. You can pull the door and the locking tab will bend clear and the door drops open. I purchased a heavy duty steel bar and will be making a new locking tab. Again, I mark this off as the manufacturer being too cheap to make the lock actually a durable means of securing it.

Drilled the holes for the anchors that just slip inside going to have to do modifications- do not trust the instructions. Update. Hinge is week. After two trial runs popped open since bracket bent. See pics.

Unit does fit, but it is REALLY thin and cheap metal for a 'security' box. I needed to replace the clasp right away as the one that came with it was so soft you could just bend it and open the locked box by hand. It is a nice size and works OK. But I wish they used a better steel. Also, the off set brackets are bigger then they need to be and waste space. Their may be a reason for this, but I think then could be smaller and give you more space for the box.Lastly, the 'nut studs' to install it are a joke. They spin super easy. I needed to weld them in place to have them hold.

It is a sturdy box for the money. The metal was thicker that I expected and the hinges are adequate. The instructions are not that great, but good enough. There are only four rivet nuts in the pack, so if you goof one up you are sunk. I didn’t want to buy a rivet nuts tool, so I found some You tube videos that show how to install them without the tool. I messed one up and ended up having to bolt through the entire tail gate…. Oh well, it’s stronger and covered by the spare tire anyway. The one drawback to this box is that it must be locked to close it! The locking mechanism is how it stays shut. I bought a $14.00 paddle latch from Amazon and I stalled that. Now I can open and close it without the keys but I have the option to lock it if I need to. This box leaves no room in the back of the TJ. It takes up all the room between the tailgate and the back seat. I have it loaded with my recovery gear. The top of the box and open box door work well as a small flat work space. The latch interferes with that a little, but the trade off is worth it. Some day in the future I plan to run power to it and install some LED lights in it and perhaps a USB charge port. The little wire straps that hold the door up seem flimsy and some times get caught when closing the door. Not a huge deal and time will tell how they hold up. Over all, I am pleased with my purchase.

Hubby had to get help to install it on his jeep, Not a easy install and had to bolt the case right through the frame. Would recommend making sure you can install it on your own and you have all the proper tools you need. Overall it's sturdy and heavy.
