I used this switch on an accent lap that I use as a nightlight. I needed the lamp to be dimmable and this provided a non-bulky solution attached to the lamp itself vs an outlet dimmer. The installation was straight forward following the cable's coding with the wider plug prong to identify the neutral cable vs the live cable. Even that the dimmer is a bigger that what I'd like it ideally to be, it's ok. Once I finished installing it, when setting it in the lowest possible setting the light was dim but with time became brighter, and was not possible to get it at a lower level, but by opening the plug again and adjusting the internal potentiometer I was able to set it to a wider range, from no brightness at all to full brightness, so it works perfectly for the use I intended it for. Be very cautious when adjusting the internal potentiometer, since you'll have the live wires exposed, so wear rubber gloves and use an isolated screwdriver.

Purchased this to retrofit a lava lamp switch to add dimming. Pros - easy install with no need to weld and no electrical skills, dimmer works well, price is good. Cons - no strain relief on the cord, so I added large globs of hot glue around the cord where it exits the housing to make it more secure. Most lamps are stranded wire and it can be hard to get a good clamp on it, so be sure to secure it well. The lack of strain relief was the only gripe. If yours isn’t allowing you to get maximum brightness, check the small white dial next to the blue main dial. You can adjust it with a flathead screwdriver to turn it all the way up when the main dial is also turned all the way up. Only do this while unplugged or you risk shock.

This is an inline dimmer. Works well. No flickering the dial moves with just right amount of resistance & dimming is consistent. Assembly is pretty quick and easy (directly were clear) but if cutting and stripping a wire is not your thing buy a plug in.

This could be hard or easy depending on knowledge and prep work. I followed the advice of the reviewer called Stefani who has the 4 part photos of install advice including how best to wrangle the wires by cutting them to half inch and then folding them over once to be quarter inch, see his photos. Also read the instructions that come with the dimmer. Remember there are 8 total screws to tighten, 4 for the wires and 4 for the housing, sometimes the unit opens such that the 4 screws for the wires are under the circuit board and you won't see them, in which case you need to take out the circuit board and flip it. You gotsta tighten the screws for the wires once they are in or the wires will easily fall out. You'll need a very small screwdriver of either flat or phillips head, I used one from an eyeglass repair kit. You'll need to identify which wire is the hot or neutral and install them in the correct place, those that do not know how to do this stuff should watch some lamp wiring videos and tutorials to learn the dos and don'ts, there's stuff you need to not do. Also one end of the dimmer circuit board says 'load' on it this end goes towards the lamp, the other end goes towards the plug. I used this on lamps that only take one bulb, this dimmer is not designed to take a heavy load with lots of bulbs. I suspect a lot of bad reviews on here are from people who did an incorrect installation and made various mistakes like overloading the dimmer beyond its rating. Also the directions included assume you already have basic wiring knowledge, they leave out a lot of things a newbie would want to know. I also suggest once you got it wired and working, glue the ends of the wires to the edge of the housing to work as a strain relief, like reviewer Stefani shows.

After realizing that Home Depot no longer stocks these replacement inline lamp dimmers, and at their suggestion, I found these on Amazon and they seemed like the reviews were positive. Mine is not & Im concerned that these might be a fire hazard. After receiving the dimmer, as someone who’s installed quite a few of them, I was surprised that the parts didn’t line up, the materials were too soft to take the screws and one of the cheap screws broke off in the casing. With all that, once the dimmer was connected, the lamp turned on and worked for the first 3 times but immediately started to flicker and then would not go to full brightness. This is potentially dangerous and I attempted to contact Amazon immediately, only to find that support online isn’t available, nor is the agent chat.At this point, I can’t seem to get a refund or even a return and will search for a better quality inline dimmer as I live these very good quality lamps. Stay away from these switches.

My wife likes to restore chandeliers. The kind with a chain that hangs down. She wanted this one to dim and I had her buy dimmable LED candelabra bulbs. This was easy to install and works fine. The wheel is off, turn it on and the more you turn the brighter it gets. However, the wiring was rather thick and the back did not want to stay snapped in place. I placed 2 plastic black wire ties around the control and through the chain. It keeps the control where it needs to be and she doesn't even notice the wire ties. This is not a fault of the device, as I said, the wire is rather thick. My wife likes it. What more can I say?

Easy to install and smooth operation. On incandescent lights it works very well; does not work with LED's. I bought a Westinghouse Lighting 4518500 3.5 Watt (60 Watt Equivalent) Dimmable Clear Filament LED Light Bulb, 2700K, Medium Base from Amazon and it lights up fine without the dimmer, with the dimmer in the circuit it does not light up! Otherwise, I'd give it five-stars!

I'm returning this. The video made installation look easy. It is, but as others have said it doesn't dim 0 to 100. More like 40 to 80. And lower than that and the LED would strobe - not ideal. But at all settings this thing makes a terrible buzzing noise, so back it goes. Now I need to go repair my lamp cord. :(
