About this item

  • Most efficient and reliable way to pre-heat engine block
  • Operates by being directly submerged into coolant and heating the block
  • Applications are specific to part numbers
  • Also referred to as freeze plug heaters or block heaters
  • Installation requires mechanical ability

A frost plug heater is an electric heater that heats the engine of a vehicle to give quicker starts and protects your engine from damage that can occur during cold weather starts. Warmed engines also deliver better fuel economy, plus improves oil flow to provide better lubrication to the engine, which reduces wear and increases engine life. The frost plug heater also cuts back on pollution as it aids in vaporization of fuel, thereby cutting back on emissions.

Makes the motor warm. fits my 4-192 perky power Cj5. Takes about an hour at zero to get it to an easy starting temp.the 2-piece plug design is a bit harder to install than the zerostart. O ring is too thin, and easy to pinch if you don't take care. Need silicone grease (not included) to get it in the block. (Do not use petro-based grease, it attacks the o-ring, then you get to do this job again after it starts leaking.)Wish the cord were a couple of feet longer. Hard to route away from danger, and still have enough length to reach out from under the bonnet.

There are only two ways these can just go bad. Improper install or not burping your system before plugging it in. I have three of these installed. One is 6 years old and the youngest is 3 years old. Never had a problem. Ordering one for my new hunting Jeep.

I've used Kat's products for many years, but apparently their quality has gone downhill quite a bit. I put one of these in my wife's 2000 Jeep Cherokee in 2008 when we bought it; it lasted 4 years (until 2012). Put a new one in at that time, which lasted until April of 2018 (Not bad so far). That one only lasted until November 2018!! (As a point of reference, I've only had 2 Kat's heaters in my Jeep CJ-7 since owning it - one in the mid 90s; the other in 2014 when I rebuilt the engine.)I guess what I'm saying is - they used to last longer than a few months or a few days. Not happy.(Edited on 11/26/18) After speaking with a tech at Five-Star (makers of Kat's products), I'm still optimistic that the products have not gone down the tubes. In the process of working out what went wrong...they want to test the current one in their facility. But they seem to be standing behind their product and are willing to help if they can.

It is the proper one for my application according to the catalog and was the 3rd block heater i'd installed that day (not all on this vehicle) but no matter what I did I could not get the O ring to seat in the block. The heater went in easily without the O ring but I sure cant install it that way.the other 2 that I had put in (other vehicles) that day, went in easily. I needed this one operational, because we are in the midst of a snowier, slippryier winter than we have had in several years// and this heater was bought for a Jeep. I have needed my 4WD more this year than any other year I have owned this vehicle ( since 2000!) I wound up replacing the freeze plug that was removed for this heater and installing a standard freeze plug once again, so I could have my Jeep back running...I ordered one of these same heaters again from a local parts store at 2X the price I paid from Amazon but T think I will return it before I open it and go somewhere I can get a Zero Start brand to install in this Jeep instead....

I read the other reviews before ordering. I've always had great luck with Kat's and (until now) would never put any other brand block heater in my vehicles. However, the reviews on this one are correct, it is not designed properly, it leaks out of the bolt screw. The problem is that the rubber washer pushes out from the screw when tightened, and leaves a space where radiator fluid seeps out. I bought a ZeroStart and no problems. Save your money, don't buy this one. This was for a Jeep Cherokee 6 cylinder.

First one lasted 2 months. Second one lasted 1 month. The element will blow. The second one I put on a timer, so it did not even run all night. It probably had less than 40 total hrs on it. You get what you pay for. I guess for 10 bucks you can't expect too much. Bought my last one of these.

This thing is an absolute peice of junk, it does not have enough strength to hold back the pressure of your coolant when it is flowing through the engine under acceleration. It popped out on me the first time i had to accelorate quickly, Please do not buy this products save yourself the frustrations and the headache.

I have been working on cars for years. I installed two Kat's block heaters and both leaked from the center hole. No matter how little I tightened the nut, the product leaked. Too cheap for an item that requires so much labor to install. Steer clear.
