I really don't know why this is required (except for a money grab opportunity). It's very expensive to have to replace this every 2 months. I just let the DESCALE light keep blinking, and make my coffee as usual. I had my previous Keurig for almost 10 years, and the descale light never once came on. It seems now it's just programmed to go off every 30 days whether it actually needs it or not.Having said this, it ruined my Keurig slim. After descaling, and having a hard time getting the light to go out, now, about 50% of the time when I attempt to make a cup, just a big blob of water comes out at the start, and the brew cycle ends. I have to pop the chamber up and reseat it, and start the cycle again. A few times I thought I was losing my mind when I started the cycle, walked away and seeing an empty cup on my return.I'm just going to use the old vinegar method if I feel the quality of my brewed cup has decreased. It's a heck of a lot cheaper.
