I had a horrible looking half-height wall around my stairs that we wanted to remove and install a railing. Due to the existing framing and finished spaces around and below in the basement, many traditional newel solutions wouldn't work. Knock on wood, these key locks have resulted in a very sturdy installation and also allowed me to install, remove and re-install the newels as I was mocking things up for the railing. Pretty cool design. I actually routed the plate in to the bottom of the newel and installed the lag bolts in to the floor framing.

Had to replace original over-the-rail system in my 200 year old house. Rather than trying to replace what I had with another over the rail setup, I opted for post to post, which seemed easier. The key to a rigid newel post, I came to learn, is having a sturdy support area underneath. That did not prove easy for me, as the original construction of the house was "curious." Mostly sturdy, but curious in some areas. I managed to find sufficient areas to place and install these and, once the rail and balusters are in place, it provides a solid feel. Could I use the newel as a tackling dummy and bounce off it because it is so secure? Likely not. But it is good and safe, which is all that matters. A router would be great asset to set the plate, as it would provide a consistent and level surface to mount on. However I don't have one, and instead used an oscillating saw and chisel. Not great, but it got the job done.

Great product, super sturdy and design. Take a little to figure out, but once you do, super easy to install.

Very stable as well as easy to use for removable stair railing. Plan to order again for an additional railing replacement in my home! So helpful to be able to easily disassemble railings to move large pieces of furniture upstairs!

You must be careful installing these so that your post come to a locked position exactly where you want them, but they are incredibly well made and beefy, and makes the posts rock solid without having any visible mounting hardware. Very happy with the quality and results.
