This 12" tool rest is a perfect fit for my Jet 1015 benchtop lathe. It's solid, comfortable to use, and it more than doubles the length of the original tool rest. That makes it much easier to work on particularly wide blanks that the original rest simply can't reach (photo) when working between points, and it gives more options for reaching the inside of deeper bowls. It's also easier to work on longer spindles or anything over a few inches long without constantly resetting the tool rest. It's a good solid tool at a competitive price.

I have an old Craftsman lath that uses 7/8" post rest. I wore through the edge of my hand on my last project. A 7/8" to 5/8" Hillman bushing was just off by enough to make it impractical as an adapter. I discovered that their is special variety of PVC pipe that was easily adjusted as an adapter. Thus, all of these new 5/8" post rests can be used on my old Craftsman lath. Hope this helps a fellow wood turner enjoy the hobby more!

Bought this to have a second rest available for my lathe. It does the job. Only one minor thing I noticed, but it's not a deal breaker. There's about an inch at the top of the post that's wider than the rest of it. That prevents me from lowering the tool rest to an ideal spot for some things I turn.

It is a tool rest! If you buy the 5/8†post tool rest, it does fit a 5/8†hole! It will also fit very loosely in a 3/4 or 7/8†hole, the results might be a bit less than desirable. It you are needing a tool rest for woodworking, this is perfect. If you are looking to cure loneliness, low self esteem, or diarrhea, this tool rest probably won’t help at all.

The rest is well-made and hefty for the money, but is not for all midi lathes.I have used it with a few medium gouges and it is fine because the height is well within my preferred adjustment range. The problem is that for Carbides and scrapers I need the top of the rest to be a half to quarter inch lower. Unfortunately, the neck of the shaft is wider than 5/8, so it won't go all the way down.I'm keeping it as it is OK 70% of the time. But also getting the DEEFINE 12" Stainless Steel model, as that will go all the way into the post hole.

It is a very nice tool rest. Nice and smooth so the lathe tools slide easily across it. And a really good price.
