Distinctive sound cuts well, but it's also passably authentic and "wood-like." Mounts conveniently within a drumset and is easy to play.

These castanets sound great! The material they are made with are very durable and should last a long time in a public school setting with the included mount -meaning it (shouldn’t) get lost!

I'm a composer, not a percussionist so take that for what it's worth. I value good instruments and try to buy quality, but I won't put these through the same kind of paces as a touring percussionist might.The price is right for these. ~$35 is about what I'd want to pay for a castanet machine. Why spend ~$100 when these get the job done? The tone is good (very castanet-y), and the plastic feels sturdy enough to whack with some sticks if you can't use your hands. LP is a known entity in the percussion world so you can at least count on a baseline level of quality which might not be the case with some of the random brands you find on amazon. I was pleased to discover these can sit flat on a table if you don't want to mount them...I was expecting them to kind of lean to one side due to the mounting hardware but that wasn't the case.The only potentially negative comment I have is that the tension for the castanets is not readily adjustable. They're held open by stretchy bands so the "action" and speed of recoil is what it is (see photograph). It hasn't been an issue performance-wise yet, but I'd personally prefer being able to tighten it just a touch. It's likely a preference thing. I wouldn't say the extant tension is a reason not to buy.I've seen models such as "the tosca castanet machine" that allow you to adjust tension by turning some wingnuts but it's also double the price. You might be able to rig something like that up, or perhaps just find tigher/looser bands to use depending on your preference.At the end of the day, the more flexible models tend to cost at least double the amount. If you need a sturdy castanet machine that you can either mount on a kit or play on a table top, yet don't need them badly enough that you want to spend ~$100, these are for you.

Amazon's service on this was great. The instrument sounds terrific and is easy to use. But it broke within three days of receipt. My view is that it should have been made by an uglier, but more durable, polycarbonate. I may buy it again at a later date, and keep it away from the other equipment. But aside from all that, the concept was flawless. Just keep extra O-rings handy...
