I learned to sew using seam guides that screw into a little hole to the right of the throat plate. I found my various sized little metal guides very useful for sewing straight and also curved seams. Basically, you just hold the fabric gently and carefully along the guide. Sewing curves takes a little technique, but using a guide correctly really helps you get nice results. Not just by eyeballing it!I bought another sewing machine recently, a computerized Brother, that lacked a proper hole for using my trusted guides. The machine sews very well, but I have found it tricky sometimes to sew a measured allowance. For narrow seams you can use the width of the presser foot as appropriate. The machine manual has some settings and suggestions. The needle can be moved to various positions left to right. For someone used to old style mechanical machines, this new machine can be a little confusing or complicated at times! It still takes time to figure out exactly what the alignment should be for your chosen seam allowance. However, if you are sewing items with a 5/8" seam allowance, especially, here is where the Madam sew seam guide excels. The ruler can help you figure out exactly where to place your magnetic guide for your allowance. The magnet holds really well and does not damage your machine. Do be careful as you lower your needle into the little hole on the ruler, so as not to break or bend your needle! You will then see where to place the magnetic guide for the accurate seam allowance. The ruler has many seam allowance choices.I find the markings on the throat plate a bit awkward and short to use as visual guides, and these new machines have a lot of plastic. The top loading bobbin and its cover get in the way of longer seam line markings. And it still matters where your needle is positioned. Anyway, I have found that this little set is helpful.

Any new sewer should definitely add this to their sewing kit. Sure sewing machines do have lines to help with accurate seam allowance, but this is so much easier to interpret. The strength and durability of magnet that comes with this is definitely not shifting at all during your sewing project. Love the clear ruler. Super easy to use, just place under pressure foot align needle with your seam attach magnet and go. Small and compact enough to not take up too much space. Affordable for the piece of mind it will give me.

I love the seam guide it is very helpful in setting my needle in the right position. The magnetic seam guide seems to work so far but it is a bit smaller than I was expecting.

I've had one of these for years and to be honest don't use it often but I'll always use it when sewing a princess seam. It doesn't get in the way and at the lower edge of the magnetic thing there's a folded over curve to it so when while moving my bodice as long as I'm having contact with that little curve I know that my entire sewing line along that "dead mans curve" as I call it, is totally even with the straighter seam lines to the bodice seam. It's just a little curve a couple mm to my right and away so since I'm turning my fabric to my left it's easy to see that the fabric is touching that curve but...not "guiding" it or obstructing. No worries about even the slightest pucker at that curve. I just made a princess bodice and dug this out so I wanted to add a new review for any new sewists out there in Amazon land :)

Whoever invented this, well done. I’ve always used a simple block of wood, but the needle and magnetic block are just a brilliant combo. The plastic needle guide is so easy to use and the magnet is VERY strong. Sometimes I struggle moving it! Lol!Very pleased with this and highly recommend any sewers out there using machines to invest in one of these.

The magnet is very strong so the seam guide doesn't budge. I am very happy with my purchase.
