Benefits of a Firm Felting Pad
Most pads on the market are soft and mushy, which results in projects becoming stuck to the pad, and creates difficulty in felting a flat, smooth surface. This is because the needle encounters no resistance on these other pads as it goes through the back of your project, carrying the fibers deeply into the pad where they remain. The barbs of felting needles are designed to carry the wool in one direction only. So when the needle travels beyond your project, it carries the wool with it, and your project becomes more and more fastened to the pad with each jab of the needle. This is common with soft mushy pads made of foam or lightly felted wool, as their softness allows the needle to go in too deeply.
The Desert Breeze felting pad is made of firmly felted wool. When the needle is jabbed through your project, the resistance in the pad prevents over-felting, resulting in cleaner, smoother surfaces on the back side of your project. This is especially helpful when felting feathers, ears, or any smooth flat project or parts thereof.
TIPS FOR SUCCESS:
- Gently press the needle through your project and stop when you feel the needle touch the pad.
- Please note: Working with this pad will feel different than most other needle felting pads on the market. The density of this pad is what helps prevent the needle from carrying the wool too deeply into the pad.
- The felted wool surface of this pad allows the tip of the needle to enter, but slows the needle down as the barbs reach the surface of the pad.
- A light touch is all that is needed for a smooth, tight, precision felted finish.

[UPDATED to include 2-D wool pictures at the end of review.]This is a great, long-lasting and enduring all wool pad. It is very firm, so it works great for sculptural needle felting/wool sculpting/3D needle felting. The needle doesn't go deep into the pad, so I find I don't end up felting my pieces into my usual foam pads. This natural wool pad is dense and makes a great protective pad. My needles don't poke through them or stick into them without deliberately pushing them firmly into it. So felting is more focused on the wool object, not pushing the wool into a pad. This is natural, so there is some vm (vegetable matter), but I'm used to using natural core wool with vm, so I like seeing it, knowing the wool is minimally processed. I just use tweezers to pluck out any bits I don't want stuck in it (which is rare). It took me awhile to get used to such a firm felting pad, but I now love how the needles barely penetrate while felting my wool figures and 3D pieces. A quality made pad, very sturdy and durable.In early 2021 I tried using it instead of dense foam for my 2-D needle felt wool animal portraits. It took a little getting used to, but by the end of my project I actually came to prefer this over the softer foam pads! It got me in the habit of stabbing more shallowly, leaving less marks. It holds well but peels off easily when the work is finished, and it doesn’t break down while I’m felting dense areas, so it’s highly reusable (I would get three portraits from foam and after five on this there’s very, very little wear showing).

I have done the rice in burlap, the wool buddy, the black foam, etc. Truly, I have tried every felting surface suggested and this is, by far, the best I have found for my style of needle-felting. I am an aggressive Felter who stabs quickly and powerfully and other surfaces degrade at varying rates over time. This surface has held up extremely well! It is easy to pull the work away from the surface and to clean the surface between colors etc.This may not fit everyone’s felting style, but if you are a bit heavy handed (go deeper than you are really supposed to with a good bit of power behind each stab), then this may be the surface for which you have been hunting!!

Love this felting mat! Ive been using sarafinas but it keeps getting holes in it. I think this will be much more durable. Nice and thick! and really well made.

This mat is extremely thick. I'm honestly not sure if I had poor quality needles or this thing was just too dense because my needles kept breaking.
