I purchased this sander to replace an old Milwaukie half sheet sander that I have for decades and which has finally died.I was surprised that no one seems to make half sheet sanders anymore--the little quarter sheet sanders have taken over. They are great for small jobs (and a I have a couple of them) but for larger jobs the half sheet sanders are much better--basically twice as fast and easier to handle. This one, as true of most Makita tools, is well made, solid feeling, and will doubtless last a long time--although I've only used it a few times so far. The sandpaper "clips" are nicer than on the old Milwaulkie sander (which they no longer make), and it has an adjustable speed, which is likely to be useful on some types of surfaces, but I haven't used it much so far.It seemed a bit pricy to me, but then if you're the only source of a handy tool, you can make a little more money off of it.

I admit I am a tool snob. I really enjoy buying and using the best tools available. This Makita is in a class of its own. I bought both the Makita and Festool FS2 E sander for testing with full intention of keeping the Festool and returning the Makita - but it worked out just the opposite. Here are my findings after one month of using both.Festool advantages:*Longer cord. Festool 11.5 ft Makita 8 ft. Nice for moving around a large table top.*Better hook-up to Festool vacs, but the Makita works great with the Fein adapter. (921072K13)*A better and more robust paper hook-up for standard sandpaper, (non hookand loop) which was my favorite thing about the Festool. The Makita's works fine but the Festool's clamp seems stronger and will probably last longer too.*Comes with a systanier.Advantages for the Makita:*MUCH smoother running -BIG surprise to me. I even called Festool and they told me to use the sander for 5-6 hours to break it in and it would smooth out. After 10 hours of use the Makita was still smoother and much more comfortable to use.*Flatter pad. The Makita came with a flatter sanding pad and that aided in keeping table tops flat. The Festool was not as flat and tended to jump around a lot when it encountered a non-flat surface.*The Makita was much easier to control.*The Makita was quieter when running at full speed.*Better flatter finish when done sanding with the Makita. For me the Makita did a better job of sanding with less vibration, was quieter and a pleasure to use. It also uses the same paper as the Festool, and was less than half the price. Just a great tool.

I have spent a lot of time holding an orbital sander in my lifetime, so when it comes to choosing one I’m kinda picky. I’m in the middle of an exterior house painting project on my hundred and ten year old house. The cedar lap has many layers of paint that’s been scraped and painted over which has made a really challenging struggle. I’m also running up against time with the cold rainy weather arriving early this season! I need help fast. That’s when I went shopping for a high quality tool . I found that in the Makita BO4900V Finishing Sander. It’s a real work horse with a really solid sanding surface that allows you to cut through the high profile material without compromising the soft hundred and ten year old red cedar lap board below. It’s also got good easer of use and handles well with the extra large size stabilizing knob to grip on the front and a generous grip on the handle. The ease of control makes it easy to work on tight angles without tearing up the wood. The clips for the sandpaper are effective at keeping the paper in place although I do have some difficulty with opening the clip because of tired hands. I’m doing a lot of overhead reaching on the upper lap and underneath the soffit which is definitely a “can do†with this tool but still pushes my hands and wrists to the limit on the weight of this tools construction. I knew that this would be the case when I started looking for the right sander so it wasn’t a surprise, there’s just no way to get a tool powerful enough to run for hours without fail, and cut through material, be maneuverable, and be lightweight. I don’t like the disposable bag dust collection system, I’m old school and prefer the canvas bag style but this is not a deal breaker by any means. Feels like I got a fighting chance to beat the calendar now and will finish painting my exterior before the snow flies. I give the Makita Finishing Sander high marks!

I do quite a lot of woodworking, furniture making and carpentry. I bought this tool to smooth the surface (before planing) of a sequoia flitch that would be used for a coffee table. The sander is very well balanced and easy to work with, relatively quiet (for a sander), with minimal vibration. Dust extraction is excellent. You can control the number of strokes which gives you the option of sanding lightly or aggressively. Makita makes excellent power tools that last--I've never had to replace any of mine; but my Makita reciprocating saw needed to be repaired twice for the same defect. (For reciprocating saws, go to Milwaukee or DeWalt). I have a Makita router that works perfectly after almost 28 years. For sanders like this, I recommend using Abranet sanding rolls--the dust is easily extracted by the sander. If nothing else, it keeps the work surface clear.
