These chisels are very well made. Tried one on some metal and it peeled the metal and showed no sign of wear. They come really sharp. A must have set for the handyman.

The Mayhew chisel kit alone costs $48. For $20 you can get a 12-15 piece set of punches, chisels, and center punches from Harbor Freight or other Chinese source. I had a cheap kit like this for 20 years and threw it out when I had to downsize and move from a house to a small apartment. It worked fine for my DIY purposes, although I didn't use them much.Now that I am retired, doing better financially, and own a comfortable home, I decided to splurge on Mayhew replacements. Unlike the imported kits, the lettering on the chisels are faint, but consistent. The uniformity of the bevel on the tips of the chisels are very good, but not perfect: on a scale of one-to-ten, around 9 on the smaller chisels and 8 on the larger ones. It looks like Mayhew hardens the chisels first, then grinds the tips.On the Mayhew pin punch set I received, I did not get any warpage on the smaller punches (it happens during the quenching process for hardening). The center punches are ground uniformly well on the tips. Overall, the tools are not as perfect as a vintage, Bauman kit from the 1980s (Swiss-made and chrome-plated vanadium steel), or a Starrett set from the 1990s, but quite nice indeed. I expect that the metallurgy and quality of the U.S. steel should be unsurpassed.

We use a lot of Mayhew products in our shop (blacksmith/metal/wood). As long as you use them as intended, and take care of them, then they will last! Very decent product and will buy again.
