I've tried lots of ball heads, both expensive and cheap. This is the best inexpensive one I've found so far, and capable of handling a big camera rig easily. Many of the cheap heads work ok, but are clearly designed for smaller cameras. This one has a double locking mech that holds steadily even with a big camera and long lens on it. You can use one knob to adjust friction and the other to lock. Or, tighten both down to hold things firmly. Very nice. Movement is pretty smooth - not buttery like a $150 Manfrotto of course, but you can't expect that. Still, better than most. There's a separate knob to lock the panning, which I like. YMMV. The Arca mount is also solid and moves smoothly. (Bonus: comes with a nice 60mm mounting plate. More versatile than the usual 50mm ones.) This ball head is the best you can get for less than $50 and the equal of many at $100 or more. Highly recommended.

Needed smaller legs for a spotting scope my kid could use at air rifle club, so got this 36mm ball and slik 500dx. Budget-minded purchases. First impressions...fit and finish is fine. Operability is typical for its price point, but overlooked that there are TWO friction knobs on ball. That might become annoying later. Should have known better about the rubber surround knurling on the knobs, as these do slip after time. But over the years have devised a fix for that. This is an inexpensive ball for inexpensive cameras. If you break your 1000$ camera with this 30$ ball, well you asked for it. For example, I would NEVER trust mounting my Hassy 500 to anything less than a solid Manfro head (see photos these reviews). Anyways, my kid will be thrilled in the end, and that's all that matters.

Seems to be a very sturdy instrument that should last a long time. The movement can be locked from either side of the base so that is convenient. The ball has just enough friction to not go flying any which direction and with just the right tightening you can even move around, with some force, to tweak the angle then crank it down to lock it in place.Everything seems smooth in functioning. There is a horizontal and vertical bubble level to help in keeping things straight in either direction if needed. It comes with a 1/4 20 insert in the base for use with that size mount if needed and when taken out it is the standard 3/8 mount. These are both the usual industry standard so if you have tripod legs or a monopod that you think you could use this for it will work on either if it has one of the two mounts sizes.The finish is very nice with no rough spots or blemishes. It seems like an all around great value for the cost.

Don't let the price fool you this works great. It looks good feels good and works well. I don't know how much it will hold but it works great with my Canon DSLR and 300mm lens.

Mounted this to a ground pod I picked up for low angle bird photography. Cheap, effective and just as advertised. Good score!UPDATE: I've used this ball head for a while now. I liked it so much on my ground pod, that I purchased another one for my monopod. I really do not understand some of the less-than-positive reviews for this thing, especially where people simply can't figure out how to use really simple gear. First of all, it holds my full-size DSLR, battery grip and Sigma 150-500mm lens (~8 pounds, all in), with NO trouble or movement, at all. Second, yes, there are TWO knobs to tighten the ball; lock them both down tight and then use whichever one you're comfortable with to loosen the ball when you need to rotate the camera. Simple. Third, some people have complained about the 1/4" mounting hole on the bottom, claiming that it doesn't fit a 3/8" tripod mount. Seriously? It has a 3/8"-to1/4" bushing in there! It has slots in it for removal/installation, which are plainly obvious if you just look at it; use a large, flat head screwdriver (or better yet, a precision needle nose pliers) to unscrew it out, and... PRESTO!... you've got your 3/8" mounting hole, right there. I removed mine and mounted it to MULTIPLE tripods and monopods; it's a no brainer. Would I use this to hold a monster prime lens/full frame DSLR/battery grip combination? No, but if you're trusting $10K worth of gear to a $28 tripod head, you're in the wrong end of the pool. For the vast majority of amateur, hobbyist photographers, even at an advanced level, this is an awesome piece. Get over your gear envy and buy it. Figure out how it works and go enjoy yourself, already. Five stars, man.

Je cherchais une rotule facile à manipuler et peut encombrante pour mes séances packshot. Celle-ci est parfaite. L'ajustement de position avec les mollettes et facile à faire et l'appareil photo tient bien dessus même avec un "gros" objectif.
