About this item

  • Half-round shape has one round side and one flat side for use on curved and flat surfaces
  • American pattern file for non-precision material removal
  • Double-cut teeth on the flat side for rapid removal of material and single-cut teeth on the round side for sharpening and deburring
  • Coarse (bastard) coarseness grade for a rough finish
  • Tang for use with an optional handle (sold separately)

The Nicholson coarse grade half-round hand file is 14" long and has one flat side with double-cut American pattern teeth and one curved side with single-cut American pattern teeth for use on flat and curved surfaces. It has double-cut coarse (also called bastard) grade American pattern teeth on the flat side for rapid material removal and single-cut coarse grade teeth on the round side for sharpening and deburring with a rough finish. The tang can be used with an optional handle for secure gripping (sold separately).

Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth have single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother, more precise finish than equivalent American pattern files.

Nicholson manufactures hand tools and power tool accessories. The company is headquartered in Sparks, MD.

Every other file feels like a toy compared to this bad boy. Versatile. Will quickly become your favorite file. Seems to hold up well too. I’d sleep with it under my pillow except I’m afraid it might fall out and scare the dog.

Feels like decent quality, cuts into steel well.

These are nice files and work as expected. Great for anyone doing welding and fabrication jobs. Just wish they lasted longer like the old ones did. These do not continue to cut well after moderate use. But I would still recommend to any welder or fabricator. Pipeliner or otherwise.

Brittle material. Fell 1 foot and broke into 3 pieces.

Still a good file but they don’t understand the difference between a single or double cut.
