Regarding the "OEMTOOLS 24338 100A Battery Tester & Voltmeter"IMO, tools need to be:Easy to use .... CHECK!Simple.... CHECK!Rugged...CHECK!Accurate... CHECK!Reasonably Priced... CHECK!Five grading points... all five "pass" hence the five star rating. This load tester is old-school simple and it's simplicity makes it not just easy to use but it will probably last forever if not smashed around.Broken down, it's basically a fixed load resistor in the form of a simple resistive heating coil (part #1) which has been calibrated to indicate Cold Cranking Amps at 12VDC on a large analog meter (Part #2) after applying the voltage using a momentary contact toggle switch (part #3) for 10 seconds (count in your head or use a watch/phone). That's it.. three parts simple. At this point it may seem like even though the device is very reasonably priced you're still overpaying as it's so simple with so few parts. Well, it probably costs under three bucks to build, but everyone's got to eat right? After unboxing I tested it on two known good and fully charged marine boat batts, a 1,000CCA Starting Battery and a 675CCA Deep Cycle "house" Battery. Both tested at or just slightly above spec which most likely means my counting 1-10 "Mississippi" may have been a little faster then 10 actual seconds. Both made the heating coil inside start to glow cherry red- which is expected and not dangerous. Keep in mind the back of the unit is metal (like the whole device) and can get pretty hot after repeated test runs or if you have several batts to test or just like to see things glow red hot! Best practice it to let the unit and it's coil cool off for a few min before running consecutive tests. Letting the coil cool between runs will give you greater accuracy as well because starting a second test with a already warmed coil will throw off the test results amperage wise. The only con I could possibly think of is that technically since the device is rated for loads "up to 1,000CCA", it's resistive coil is probably is oversized for small 12v batteries like the type found in lawn tractors, etc so test results on those small CCA batteries may not be very accurate. You also need to test using a fully charged battery, that's not a "con" thought, it's simply a condition needed to get accurate results. All in all.. a very handy, functional unit at a very reasonable price that should last forever if not abused.PS.. please wear eye or even better full face protection when testing as you never know what will happen when you put a battery under real load. Be safe not sorry people! I've had a 12v car battery explode near me... not fun at all!!

I've already got a multimeter and a digital battery tester, but I wanted an old school carbon pile tester to put a good old-fashioned mechanical load on my batteries.Just got done testing my powerstroke diesel truck batteries, which are rated at 850 CCA. I had them at full charge and I had the negative cables disconnected on both batteries, which mimics them being out of the vehicle. They both tested good, but I was only able to put a 400 CCA load on them instead of the 425 CCA load I needed, which is half the rated cold cranking amps. So even though this machine is rated at 500 amps, it actually only goes to 400 amps, which is a bit of a disappointment. It's a nice looking unit and everything was nice and secure on mine. Both gauge needles were right at zero too. They are adjustable with the little screw on the face of the glass if you didn't know. One thing that is a little confusing with all of these carbon pile testers is they show on the left input dial 3 different scales: amps, amp hours, and CCA's. The instructions call for testing using CCA or amp hours, however, you are apparently not supposed to use the cold cranking amp scale on the bottom for testing purposes. It is only on there to correspond with the amps on the upper large black scale. In other words, when testing an 850 CCA battery you want 425 amps, which corresponds to the 850 ccas on the bottom scale. When drawing an imaginary line between them they are lined up if that makes sense. The instruction should be more clear on this issue and I have contacted the company to let them know.I deducted one star for the unclear instruction as mentioned above, and because it failed to reach higher than 400 amps. All in all it's still a valuable tool and I'm glad I have it.One other thing to note is that the 15 second timer begins as soon as you start turning the load knob. Since you have to turn it several times around for a high CCA rated battery, by the time you get it up to the needed load there are only a few seconds left. So the timer will go off well before you have your target load on it for 15 seconds. That doesn't leave you much time to look closely at the right side gauge to see your test result. As soon as you hear the alarm go off you need to start backing off on your load. It is not uncommon for smoke to come from the machine during the load test.

This unit is so simple to use that I cannot believe that I waited so long to get one. Granted it tries to put a little bit much onto the meter scale, but it is pretty clear what the meaning is. The only weakness that I found was that it does not do very well on smaller batteries such as on lawn mowers. Even when brand new, they are shown as marginal. These small batteries have a very difficult time to produce the 280 amp-hr rating that they promise - 200 amp-hr is about the limit and barely shows on the meter's scale. This tester works very well on automotive batteries of all sorts at 12 vdc and up, but has a tougher time at lower voltage like 6 vdc although it does work ok.When a battery is weak, this tester will ferret it out in a heart-beat and will save you a bundle of BS trying to keep the bad one going when it doesn't have a chance of serving properly and will fail shortly. This tester is worth every penny it cost.

Tested my 6 years old Battery in Nissan Fronter. Battery failed after 5 seconds on test.Indicator paused on “Weak” Replaced New Battery I had charged- Tested All Good.I am a retired Industrial Electrician and appreciate testing equipment and methods that have worked for years. Don’t forget if you have a Lead Acid Battery to check the liquid level and if necessary, add distilled water. Do not use tap water. Electrolyte solution in battery is weak after adding distilled water Charge the Battery to capacity before using.

First one was unusable and my replacement only does 280 amps. Had to make a metal washer to get it to do at least 400 amps. Don't waste your money, just buy the Viking one at harbor freight.

produit intéressant mais mal assemblé, pièces mobile dans boitier, ne respecte pas les normes d'assurance qualités, semble manqué d'inspection avant l'envoi au consommateur pour éviter de la perte de temps et des frais d'envoi-retour.

This is an entry level battery tester that can provide you with the current level of charge as well as checking the cranking capacity of any 12 volt battery. This can be very useful for those cold mornings when the car won't start, it will help determine if replacement is warranted.
