  • At sometime or another you may run out of pins on your Arduino board and need to extend it with shift registers.
  • This example is based on the 74HC595.
  • The datasheet refers to the 74HC595 as an "8-bit serial-in, serial or parallel-out shift register with output latches; 3-state."
  • In other words, you can use it to control 8 outputs at a time while only taking up a few pins on your microcontroller.
  • You can link multiple registers together to extend your output even more.

I ordered a total of 50, and pulled 20 at random to test in a basic Arduino circuit. All worked as expected even at high speeds, but I can't say that I've pushed them to the edge of their specs to see if they'll hold up.Anti static packaging would have been nice, but the lack of it doesn't seem to have caused any harm, and at this price point I can't really complain.

These IC’s were of good quality. They were shipped and received without pins being damaged, because they were in packaged in foam. I would purchase again when the time arises.

Chips ship inserted into foam pad and wrapped in clear plastic & scotch tape. Anti-static bag would make me more confident to order but I tested every chip on arrival and all performed well. Overall, a great price for chips that I use constantly to provide unlimited # of outputs while using only 3 output pins in my Arduino scripts.
