How to Get Great Results with our Bats

Clean the Wheel Head

Clean the Wheel Head

Make sure the wheel head is free of any dry clay, which can create an uneven surface and make the bat wobble.

Placing the Bat

Placing the Bat

Our bats are made to have a snug fit on the bat pins. If you need to widen the holes, it's easy to do with a small nail file or sandpaper.

Using the Bat

Using the Bat

You should wire your pot immediately after throwing to ensure it comes off easily when you're ready to trim. Ideally, you should use the opposite side of the bat every time you use it and clean it after each use. If clay is allowed to dry on the bat, it will warp the bat as it dries and shrinks. Make sure not to bend the bat as you lift it.

Storing the Bat

Storing the Bat

Store bats flat if possible. Do not soak or leave water pooled on top. If you find that your bat has cupped or warped, it can be fixed by placing it on a flat surface with a heavy weight laying on top.

holes set 10 inches apart to fit most pottery wheel heads

Designed to Fit Most Standard Wheels

Our pottery bats are designed to fit most standard wheels made by Amaco, Shimpo, Laguna, Skutt, and others. The standard is for bat pins to be placed 10" apart. Still, some wheels may have pins that are slightly wider or narrower (especially after many years of use). That's why our bats have two pin holes of different sizes, one standard and one oblong, so they can adjust to most wheel heads. Our bat pin holes are designed to fit snugly so they can last longer.

Beveled Edges for Comfort

Penguin Pottery bats have beveled edges so that your hands can rest comfortably. No sharp edges on our bats!

Great product. My only complaint is that there is an answered question by the seller that says these bats don’t come with pins so I ordered pins as well and the bats came with pins included. I paid for pins I didn’t need. Not expensive but the product details and questions seem to be outdated and misleading. Please update the product details and add an answer to the question so buyers know what comes in the box.

I gave the board a 4 overall and a 2 star for durability - first one already warped (2 weeks) and barely fits on wheel head pins...doubt it will last too long but still using. Probably will not repurchase.

I've purchased other Penguin products and they've been the best quality, but can't recommend these bats at all unfortunately.First off, these are way overpriced. I ordered them because I wanted a quick delivery from Amazon, but should been patient and ordered from a pottery shop where bats are a fraction of the price. Secondly, the holes are too small to fit the bat pins. I tried on both Shimpo and Brent wheels and found that the holes just weren't spaced far enough apart and the diameter was too tight for the pins. I had to drill new holes - not difficult, but certainly a hassle. Lastly, I haven't used them much but for ware boards due to the issue with the spacing and they are already warping.

I wanted smaller bats bc they take up less room when letting things dry and these are great. The lack of bat pin holes is sometimes an issue if I’m centering harder clay but otherwise no complaints!

These are a lot thinner than other bats I have of similar material. I like them because you can typically leave your thrown work on them without your work cracking. Since I use a community space and don't have my own studio, it is often a few days to a week before I remove my work from bats. My main complaint with these is that they warp, no matter what you do. I've had that issue occasionally with other bats, but it's not every time. These warp every time. So every time I use them, I have to set them aside with weight on them to make them useable again. If not for that, these would be great. The pin hole line up perfectly so there is no wiggling around when they're on the wheel. As they are, I would not purchase these again.

This was so easy to install on my Vevor pottery wheel and the bats work great. This is the second set of these that I have and will buy again if I find I need more

I would have liked it better if the five inserts had arrived as promised. The package I received only contained four, so 20% less than promised. I wrote to the company and they haven't responded so clearly their attitude to customer service matches their ability to pack the promised product. The product itself seems sturdy so far and I've used the four bats without incident but I wouldn't buy anything from Penguin again.
