There's the algae and sludge in the pond builds up. I've had to change the filter. Actually, clean the velvet more often, but I'm working on the algae and sludge problem.I've become an expert at taking the motor apart and cleaning it. It's because my dogs shed and it gets into the filter mechanism I think it works perfectly well

I use this in my small 900 gallon garden fish pond. It does a good job of keeping the water clean and runs reliably. It definitely cuts down on the algae. It's difficult to clean because the whole thing needs to be lifted out of the pond to be taken apart. Cleaning is needed at least once a week. That said, my pond is healthier than it has ever been. I would buy this pump again and maybe improve the design of the pond to facilitate cleaning.
