As advertised. It was somewhat tough to buy a replacement diamond indenter and wish they would also sell these on Amazon. That's the reason for the missing star. Otherwise fantastic in every way and I did contact the company for another indenter and it arrived promptly thereafter.

I've been looking for the ames units used, but they are either incomplete and sold by someone who doesn't know what they are, or sold used by someone who knows what they are and priced to the moon, still with no guarantee that they're working properly.I got one of these yesterday, shipping was faster than expected, and have tested about 50 things so far and found the unit to be easy to use and consistent (all rockwell C scale stuff in the 60-64 range).Only thing I wish i could find is somewhere to buy a spare diamond indenter in case I do something to accidentally damage the one that's in the machine. Again, the ames option, isn't so great - costs as much for a diamond indenter as this entire unit with base does).Pleased, though. Five stars and already helping me assess changes in heat treatment process.Packaging for shipment was excellent, case inside box inside another box. And the case for storage is both handy and very good at protecting the tester.

If you do your own heat treat, you need one of these to verify your results. I was following industry recipes for steels, but as I later learned, I was not getting the maximum out of the steel. I learned to cut a 2" square coupon, and follow my recipe, then test and see if my results were in fact what I was hoping for. Even fairly simple 1095, can be problematic, but getting a good measurement after a full treatment is so very important. This is not an inexpensive tool, but it does work well and it will improve the quality of your blades, and help you further your journey to sole authorship.
